While I not actually a member of the North Alabama Reef Club (and from my reading here it may not really exist in an active state), I am in North Alabama and wanted to share. Thanks to some online retailers, the folks at Paradise Aquatics (thanks Mike and Payton), Jason and Tammy at Fins and Frags, and hopefully H@rry soon after the holidays, I am putting together my first reef after at 8-9 year hiatus.

Here is a video of my 60g tank roughly 60 days after the cycle was done. Nothing special...just yet.

Welcome to R2R and the "North Alabama gang". I enjoyed your video. Nice job in rendering an interesting video. I too like the Chromis and the Scopas Tang is one of my favorite fish. Cube tanks are becoming more and more popular and from looking at yours it is easy to see why. Good job. Your substrate looks pretty course, hope you don't have problems with detritus getting trapped in it.

As far as NARC goes, we are a virtual club. When you say "virtual" then the next word you say is untrue. Several of us (let me see if I can remember who) Mariner, Tomoko, Yoda, Kyle, Brownisbetter, and one or two more got togather one afternoon at John Newby's old shop to meet each other and talk reefs. I think that was in '02 or '03. For a long time we met monthly at someone's home, an LFS, or went to regional frag swaps. We never had an organized club; no officers, no bylaws, no dues, just a small group of Reef Freaks who liked to get togather. One of the biggest things we ever did at a meeting is EAT. Some of us have no idea how to maintain a reef tank but we can certainly hold our own when it comes to eating. We've seen several people come and go over the years. From what I've heard the average person stays in the hobby about a year. From what I've seen I'd say it was more like 9 months. Without exception, (from my observation) the common denominators for the failures are getting in over your head as far as number of tanks or size and trying all the new gadgets, whims, and techniques. My philosophy is KISS. The catalyst that holds our group together is Tomoko. She always seems to manage to get the ball rolling when we get stagnant.

Stay tuned for further updates and keep the tank looking as good as it does in your video! :haha:

Jason, how much off? I'm having trouble with the math, and no, I'm not taking medication at the moment. Merry Christmas to you and Willie; the invite still stands if you want to drop in.

Looks like you are off to a great start! Welcome back to reefing and welcome to the "club"! H@rry is exactly right about the virtual club. Many of us have other obligations that prevent us from making regular meetings. I travel with my job about 6-8 months out of the year so I am usually not around for a meeting. But I am able to get online most any time so R2R is how I stay in the loop with what's going on in the club.

.

Thanks for the compliment. I shot that using a Canon digital still camera with a movie feature. Not the best, but it works to chronicle my progress.

I am one of those people who have come and gone. I tore down my last tank (75g LPS/Softie) tank a few years back when work got in the way. This is my 3rd reef, and 5th or 6th SW tank over the last 20+ years (and freshwater even further back). I designed this one to be low maintenance (or as much as one can be) and automated quite a bit. One of my primary design criteria when choosing size was that a 10 percent water change fit in a single bucket (I have a 7gal bucket from IO Salt from many years ago). So in the what is required department, 5 minutes a day and an hour a weekend and I can pretty much maintain it. Less time than I spend on the dog.

I love the cube design and that was a compelling reason to get back in. With the Radion LED lighting and furniture grade stand, it is modern looking and compact enough to act more as an accent and less centerpiece. I don't think my wife would have gone for the "wall of water" look in her Pottery Barn home, and that is not what I was looking for either.

Yeah, the substrate is a little coarse, so I will have to take care to keep it stirred up. Those MP10s do manage to keep a lot suspended long enough to skim, but probably not enough. There really isn't as much in there as it might appear. I just didn't want a DSB nor do I like BB. The rocks sit on egg crate and the substrate is basically poured around the edges.

Thanks again.

That's a sweet tank! Looking forward to watching it grow!

I was going for 10% off.Dont know how that happened. It was during my first few cups of coffee.LOL.
Thanks for the invite,I have not decided what Willie and I are gona do for Christmas yet.I know we are going to my Mom's Christmas Eve.I may head out and about or just take alot of liquid medication.I have so many things running around in my head its scarey in there(more than normal).Tell M@rry Ruth I said I love her and will see you soon.

For some reason the caps are not working right so I will spell it out. Ten percent off everything in stock and we pay all sales tax as well, maybe that will show right this time.
