Hey Guys

So we finally moved away form the city, got a house in a small seaside town with lots of space and so follows the mandatory tank build :)

Dimesions are 10ft x 3ft x 30" tall, starfire front and sides, all DIY style.

I had the sense to have the stand professionally welded on the mainland out of 2" steel. Being a fan of building my own stands out of wood in the past, this was quite a change but getting a 10ft surface perfectly level out of wood (on an uneven wood floor) would be too much for me. I would probably run out of talent half way though anyway and end up with a floating lounge in a couple of years.

Got the glass panels delivered straight to the moving truck, and offloaded in my new garage! No chips that I can see so far:

With the help of a couple of borrowed furniture dollies we got the stand in the house. The thing is deceptively heavy! We got it through the front door with 1/2" clearance!

The original position for this tank didn't end up working out. Structurally it would have been in a bad place, sitting over the finished basement suite we were hoping to rent out. It also would have made getting in the front door a bit troublesome ;p

So we went for option B! Pretty sweet.

I didn't initially want the fish too close to the living room with TV and noise, but in retrospect it's probably one of the quietest places in the house, and most importantly, over a well reinforced crawlspace. Besides, any leaks and it runs straight out to the deck! Hopefully not :/

I'll board up the window behind and maybe use it to vent out some of the humidity.

So I took a first stab at getting the main panels in place, got $150 dollars worth of RTV 108 silicone laid down...

... and then found that one of the spacers got pushed out and squashed the silicone out of one of the joints completely.
Also, for some reason I got a TON of issues with the bead itself. Some smaller bubbles but then also some weird shaped lines and bubbles.

Only one thing to do... got someone to help me tear the whole thing down again & back to square one. Sunofa%$#$#

Now starts the fun of scraping the 10foot panels for hours, and hours, and hours... There's this guy online that suggests using a Dremel with steel brush tip to remove the silicone. I might give that a try. Having stripped my previous build down once I know how long these things take with a razor blade. On the upside all that acetone helps dull the senses ;p

I've got 7 new tubes of RTV silicone adhesive in a UPS truck somewhere heading for the border and should be able to try again next week once it arrives. Pity they have to ship the stuff as HAZMAT. Costs a fortune in customs charges as well. The stuff's well worth it though in my mind, tensile strength being way more than silicone sealant. Or so I hope :)

Ugh I feel for you. I did this on a 75g and the cleaning up and prep process is LOOONGGG if you wanna do it right. Lots of scraping and alcohol. I bought some cheap Popov Vodka to clean the glass clean.

Man that sucks especially when those panels weigh a TON!
 
@ReefMadScientist, LOL. Yeah like you said... lots of alcohol. And then maybe clean the silicone off tomorrow ;p

Those panels are HEAVY. I think I called in all my favors getting them in the 1st time, running out of friends fast on this build, hehe.

I hear ya man. Rubbing alcohol was expensive so I bought some cheap Vodka at the store which was like a two liter for 5 bucks lol.

With the silicone, I tried cards, hard plastics, etc. etc. The only thing that works like a charm is a plain razor. As long as you keep it horizontal to the panels and wet, you won't scratch it. Plus, it will be siliconed again anyways so its not like you will see any small scratches.

Yeah those panels are no joke, be very careful because those can lop off a finger with ease.
 
Very nice! I would love to build my own tank and maybe some day I will. Following along this one!
 
Major breakthrough! Some friends came over from out of town unexpectedly and I put them to work :)

We got the panels in place and the new seams glued. I used 11 tubes(as opposed to the previous attempt's 6) to lay the main seams so now I'm out of silicone again. lol. Good news is this time the seams look absolutely amazing! No bubbles and good spacing throughout as far as I can tell. Thing of beauty! I'll only be able to inspect the rear seam once I've taken the jigs off though... but it looks really good so far.

I'll give the main seams a week to dry and then add the bracing, give it another week and then we have to lift this sucker up to get the foam underneath.

In the meantime I've been stocking up on plumbing supplies and have the Reeflo gold dusted off that I bought a couple months ago in preparation. One more box should be shipped by later this week with some valves and couplings.

This is a BRAVE undertaking. I consider myself a big time DIY'er, but this is something I would never attempt! Way to go man! And I can't wait to see it progress.
 
Can't wait to see this complete, not sure I'd under tank that either haha, I would be expecting water all over my lounge lol
 
... good thing it's a sunken lounge? I'll just caulk the flooring around the edges & fill 'er up ;p
 
Hey Guys... so 3 days into my perfect silicone seams curing, still clamped, these bubbles / tears started forming in the center of the seams.
Anyone seen this before? Almost lost control of my bowels when I saw this last night and have been up googling ever since to no avail.

The darker portion in the photo is the structural seam, then the corner bead to the left and the blue painters tape...

Any chance that this is normal? That the black silicone does it too but you just can't see it?
I'm close to the end of my rope here :(
 
Steel braces... anyone use steel angle iron braces on the vertical corners to strengthen a seam? I'll have to paint them really well but think from a structural point of view it should work. I'll silicone them onto the corners and maybe run a flat bar at the bottom too, hidden by die stand's cladding.

After being informed by more than a few members that you can't reseal the non-structural areas of a aquarium (cutting away the old bead) I decided to contact the manufacturer of the tank I had... and I quote; "as long as the structural seal has not been compromised in anyway, the non-structural bead is irrelevant" end quote.

That said, and while not normally seen, also IMHO the little air pocket shouldn't have an impact on the structural seal.

You are much braver than me! This is awesome and the stuff that legends are made of. Definitely following this one.
