6045 with removable impeller shaft...

I just bought a used 6045 from the LFS and while I know better did not have them plug it in prior to purchase. Once home I plugged it in to find it only works intermittently. Upon further inspection the impeller shaft is loose and actually removable. I own two other nanostreams (6045 and 6055) and know this is not right. The question is whether this can easily (and cheaply) be repaired, or whether I should return it to the LFS. Thanks for your input.

The metal shaft should not pull out, the only scenario I can imagine this occuring in for a new 6045 is that the shaft was not pressed in at the factory. Either the assembler missed it completely or was interrupted and did not seat it fully. A mechanical press is used to push it in and seat it. If this was an older used 6045, it would be feasible as the fit of the shafts were looser and not as well controlled especially prior to 2008, new pumps have a mechanical flow control, this change occured in 2009. You could send it to me or return it to the dealer if it is a new model pump. If it was an older used/clearance model, the dealer would be the only recourse.

Thanks for the reply rvitko. It's an older model (no flow control). It is a shame to hear that Tunze knows the older models have a quality issue but won't do anything to make it right. I have 5 Tunze products (4 pumps and an Osmolator). This pump was going to replace the only non-Tunze pump in my tank. I have always held Tunze's quality and customer service in the highest regard. Both just slipped a little in my book.

While I can sympathize, the product is several years old and past the warranty period of 2 years. We do constantantly improve our products, every 6-12 months almost every product gets some refinement and in the time that has passed a 6045 has had an upgrade to the clamp, a better shaft, a better drive unit, a quieter disk assembly, firmer locking front cover and the flow adjustment, basically almost no two pieces are identical. We do generally offer a discounted upgrade or replacement past the warranty and that would hold true here. But based on your original post it sounded like an older used product that you would come out ahead returning for a refund and simply purchasing a new one.

First of all it takes a big man or company to admit they have a problem with their product on a forum like this. Not only that but do it willingly and also explain what has been done to fix it. Roger has been far and above the best person I have ever dealt with on warranty and non warranty service issues. Fact of the matter is you bought a USED pump from a shady LFS. Any LFS in my area plugs in used equipment as well do most customers. You expected Tunze to warranty something you didn't purchase new or from an authorized dealer. Way to try and get something you don't really deserve.

I used to have several of the 6025 & 6045 when they first came out. Had a bunch of issues with the drive shaft rusting out on several of them. They did replace the motor blocks though. I have since switched over to Vortech.

Seriously!? Please don't disrespect me or the LFS. I never asked for a replacement or anything undeserved. I asked if it could be repaired at a reasonable cost.

Please read and comprehend a thread before insulting people.

Thank you for the response and clarification. A replacement discount is exactly the type of customer service I expected Tunze would have. My faith in you customer service has been restored. In this case I won't be needing it as the LFS is taking it back for a full refund. I may have to take you up on it at a later date should my other "old" 6045 need replacing.

Really a lil sensitive aren't we. You say it's a shame they won't do any thing to make it right. If you would have bought new maybe they would have. You say you hold their customer service in high regard but when they say they won't warranty it you say they slipped in your eye. If they warrantied every pump that was bought second hand and out of the warranty period they go broke eventually.( Doubtful due to great quality of pumps-4 out of my 9 pumps are 6-8 years old and still going) Ok maybe the shady LFS should be changed to lazy, It takes 2 seconds to plug something in right. If you were truly insulted by what I said I feel sorry for the way everyones sensitivity levels are going.

No need to apologize... oh wait that wasn't an apology. You still aren't understanding either of my posts. Initially I asked if it could be repaired, not for free but repaired. I never expected (or asked for) a free replacement pump. That would be ridiculous. My second post was based on Tunze having no recourse for a known problem, which in my opinion, is poor customer service. Roger later clarified that Tunze does help to make it right.

Once again... Please read and understand before opening your mouth or typing a post.
