Hey all! I am starting a new build so I thought to document it! I got sick a while back and ended up selling my reef tank and giving a lot of stuff away:

http://www.reefedition.com/reef-spotlight-bret-hartmans-120g/
https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/harts-acro-growout.176670/page-2

and converting it to FW with an automatic drip system for pretty much no work on my part as I was not home much. I am still a bit gun-shy of a large reef system but had been kicking the idea around of a nano – I have a jellyfish cubic 20 but while jellies did great they were just too much daily work for me as I found they did best on live baby brine and hatching those daily wasn’t much fun. The commercial foods, besides sunset marine frozen baby brine, were just too messy. I put a really nice Duncan from divers den in there and it seems to be doing ok, but it’s really not the vision I had for the system.

Well I have a friend who is a local reefer and he happens to have a marineland 24” cube and a bunch of equipment. He is going to trade me the jelly tank for a bunch of gear! I say trade, but he is really generous and pretty much giving me this extra gear he has picked up from all over the place. How amazing is that??

So anyway let the ordering begin! 1st up is the stand. The tank had a homemade one, but it looked a little rough so I went to my LFS and asked about 24” cubes stands, they have the marineland and deep blue professional. I saw the maineland has an open top, which seems crazy for a rimless tank, so I ordered the DBP stand. Bonus it was on sale and cheaper than the marineland at $175. Works for me! I have never tried building a stand and I feel like for that price it saves me a lot of aggravation.

I will put some pics later, I don’t have the tank or stand yet, but got 1st BRS shipment including skimz up21 sump, and it looks really nice! Cube tanks are hard to get good sumps, the filter socks are not in the most handy spot, but it’s a tradeoff for size and I am really happy with it for 200 buck range. The built in ATO reservoir is nice, I don’t know how long 3 gallons will last though. Also snagged BM T11 doser, I plan on using it for CA, ALK and vinegar with MG done by hand and a brightwell block for bacterial in the sump as I might have a minimal display. I run BB and have some white starboard on the way, I will have to ask for help to cut it for the overflow, that stuff is really tough.

Got a bunch of plumbing coming as well. I don’t want to use the stock stuff, I want to run a herbie with the two holes, I then plan on drilling a hole in the overflow section (behind the overflow corner in the glass) and running lockline out the front of the overflow like stock. I plan on masking the overflow section and painting black on the outside with black PVC return pipe, I think that should look clean, and my goal is to have the tank have visual interest from all 4 sides which I think I can do with the above steps which is a cool benefit of a side overflow vs external or rear. I have only done black backgrounds with rectangle aquariums which really are all about the front view, so this should be interesting and a fun change for me to try.

I don’t have too much now, but I hope to keep updating!

Oh and my GF glofish tank for fun:

Bro this is exciting! Glad you're feeling better and if this is anything like your last reef it's gonna be spectacular!

This was from his last reef!

Thanks Rev!! I have grand visions!

Still waiting on parts! Hope the stand will be in this Friday. I got the starboard in, but until I get the tank I don't know what will need to be cut for the overflow. I hope someone locally has a good band saw, this starboard is thicker than what I have bought in the past and it is sure tough stuff! A bummer our local fragfest swap is this weekend and I won't have a tank ready... such nice coral that is cheap!

Ordered 45lb or 20" plus tonga dry rock from BRS. I plan on cutting and shaping it if needed - have some epoxy and threaded nylon rods to make the shapes I want, it should be interesting and I hope the rock is what I am hoping as I really want to make this have visual interest from all 4 sides and the rock will be key.

Found out I am getting 2 radion xr30 lights with reeflink and mounts from my friend!! They are G1 that has been upgraded to G2, but I think I am going to send them in for the G3 (regular) upgrade for $175 per light. I am a huge fan of violet and UV and this will add those. Two of these bad boys over a 24" cube should be plenty of light, haha. The G3 pro upgrade really only adds yellow LEDs so I have no desire to pay the extra money for that upgrade.

Rock comes in today! I will post some pics. I don't have the tank or stand yet so I have not really had any photographs to share yet... Emailed ecotech, they responded same day, said if the radions were upgraded to G2 then I can just get the G2-G3 upgrade. $150 each for new LEDs and with UV and violet heck yes!

This will be SPS tank, but I really like my old bazooka joe chalice so I will get another of those. The WWC jellybean is also calling me...

I mean I will need something to put in the lower light spots right?

45lb tonga. Was two pieces but the one broke which is fine for me. Almost prefect size.

So I picked up the nicest masonry bit I could, and a sawsall blade for heavy metal...

Wow this tonga is crazy dense!!!

Drilled holes, cut the nylon rod, filled with super glue and waterweld. I am very pleased and I think it does have interest from all sides. Hard to capture in pics.

Fitting the pieces. I drilled the holes in all before gluing, but need support. Cut the bases flat(ish) and trimmed one of the large branches.

And just got done! Hope the expoy all holds, but I am very happy with the open structure as I want corals to grow through it. The waterweld filled in the spaces fantastically and hopefully the threaded rod will lend some great strength.

It's only 4 pieces and held in 3 places, so it turned out pretty slick so far I think. Does look better in person though.

Thanks! It's hair under 21" too, so that worked out really nice. It should be great when coral starting coming up through it.

Got seaklear so will start the rocks soaking in couple days. I was going to do acid bath, but I think LaCL should be enough.

Dang. The lfs called and the stand that was supposed to be here didn't make shipment and will be another two weeks, but they will give a discount which is nice.

Nice Tonga rocks.
Where did you order it?
How many pounds did you order to get those big pieces?

Thanks

Got the tank and gear! Sadly the skimmer is kaput, so I will need to buy a new one. Got the return line drilled! As I said before I will use the two holes for a Herbie setup and run the return externally.

I have used flexi dip for backgrounds and it was worked great with white and black. I masked off the overflow to paint the glass black and it really looked nice and dark. Then I took the masking tape off... I never masked flexi dip before... It will pull off with the tape! I cried a bit after spending hours on that. I don't know if I will paint it now...

So I put the rock in for fun. The starboard is a bit too big so I need to have it cut not only for the overflow but bit smaller. I think the rock looks good in there, but it's hard to see it well in the pics
