Just wondering what our resident chemist (@Randy Holmes-Farley )thinks of this article? With so many of is trying to mimic the ocean, it seems others want to change it.

My immediate concern is where does all that sodium hydroxide come from and what are the implications. Right now, it comes from a process that makes chlorine , the chlor alkali process. It takes a huge amount of electricity and what does one do with the huge amount of Cl2 that would be made.

From Wikipedia:

Because the process yields equivalent amounts of chlorine and sodium hydroxide (two moles of sodium hydroxide per mole of chlorine), it is necessary to find a use for these products in the same proportion.
