Hey everyone, this is my first post to Reef2Reef... so hello! Just a little background, I've been in the saltwater hobby for about 4 years now and I've been keeping corals for about two. My current tank is a Red Sea Max 130d with the inTank media upgrade and tunze skimmer.

As everyone knows, its time to upgrade. I just pulled the trigger and ordered a custom built rimless tank here in Toronto. Should be ready in 3 weeks. Here's a brief run down of what I'm planning to do:

Equipment

Tank: Rimless starphire 36Lx24Wx18H (internal overflow)
Custom sump with refugium
Lighting: Planning on LEDs (leaning towards 2 Ecoxotic Panorama Pros)
Skimmer: used RLSS 500 gal recirculating skimmer I got online for a steal. I've attached a picture below.
Controller: Neptune Apex Lite
Tunze oslolator ATO
BRS Dual GFO & Carbon Reactor
Dosing: Two Part with BRS Dosing Pumps
Return: Not sure yet. Suggestions would be great!
Stand: Custom

This will be a work in progress over a month's period, so bare with me. I'm planning on plumbing the tank with PVC as I'm trying to keep everything in the stand nice and clean for easy access and troubleshooting. If anyone knows of a thread of a member's tank similar to mine toss it my way it would be greatly appreciated.

Comments and advice more than welcome. Love to hear your thoughts!

Cheers,
Morgan

sound like this is gonna be a great build.2 mp10 is good enough and for return,i would go with a eheim 1260 or 1262 pump

Hi, welcome to r2r!!! I think 2 mp10's should be good for flow. I use 2 on my 55 and I am pretty satisfied with the flow.

This may be a silly question, but I've seen plenty of tanks that don't have a check valve on the return line. I was planning on putting one on mine in case the return pump fails to prevent a siphon. Am I missing something?

MCDM - Most reefers do not have a check valve on their return mainly because of two safety features they incorporate that come pretty standard:

1: Their sump usually holds enough "extra" water in case of pump failure.
2: The return, the part actually in the water usually has an anti-siphon hole to prevent back siphoning, or is shallow enough that the sump can handle the "extra" water going to it.

I also believe two MP10s would be enough flow for your tank. :)

Hope this helps!

Congrats! Those are the exact dimensions I am about to order but with corner overflow. I've already got the 27" Maxspect Razor and carrying over the equipment from my old Elos setup.

One piece of equipment on your list that I would not recommend is the BRS Dual Reactor. I was completely unhappy with mine as it clogged way too easily. Better to go with the individual BRS reactors or another brand altogether.

Hey TXSun, I am also looking at the Maxspect Razor, half the price than 2 Panorama Pro 18'. Will the Maxspect cover enough of the tank since ours will be 24 inches deep?

Find out what thickness your tank is going to be since its rimless. mp10s might now work if if thicker then 3/8". Perfect dimensions though, Looking forward to pics of the tank!

also, for return, i suggest a tunze silence return. Tunze 1073.040, This is the return I use on a tank with the same dimensions as you have listed. Its quiet and efficient.

Thanks Zoacoral. Should have the tank when I return from London on the 27th.

Does anyone know what the light spread is for the maxspect razor 27 inch?

Should be fine. On another forum, a couple of folks with similar dimensioned tanks have posted that the coverage could be better on the front and back but still good enough to keep softies/LPS. I plan on an open rockwork without any near the edges and on the sandbed and this should be a perfect setup for me.
