6ft peninsula owners, success with flow all on overflow side?

hey all, i'm looking for some war stories of those that have succeeded (or failed!) in managing all the flow on one side for a long peninsula tank.

i'm currently cycling my waterbox 7225, and am experimenting with 2 XF350 gyre's mounted vertically on each side of the overflow while the tank bakes.

if you've attempted a similar setup, how did it go? what powerheads did you use to accomplish your desired flow? did you run sand or bare bottom? did you need specific aquascaping to make it work? any other gotchas i should be aware of before i start adding livestock?

I'll give ya a bump with some thoughts as it's a dilemma even in a shorter length tank of 48".

Right now I gave in and have pumps on the open end.

I have thought of reversing things and have a descending level of rock that's higher on the open window end and few acros near the overflow.

There are a lot of tanks set up this way.
I see the problem more as its harder to get random flows.
I have a 6 foot peninsula and put the return at the far end away from the overflow. I also have a Gyre 350 I have it next to the overflow
I dont yet know how well this will work, its a new set up and just started the cycle a few days ago. Time will tell but I think it will work out fine.

to report my current findings, running at both low and high mounting heights (on overflow side) the 2 XF350s at 100% alternating gyre cause considerable sand disruption.

i'm beginning a new test capped out at 20% alternating gyre and will increase to see where it becomes too much

Running overnight, the 20% alternating gyre still pushed the sand all over. This is caribsea special grade sand

It took me about a month to get all the random modes with 2 vortechs. Keep in mind once a bio film builds up. You will still have more adjustments.between raising and lowering the power heads or offsetting them a bit. I know you have different powerheads. But wwc does one on constant and the other on random.

yeah hopefully once i have more organic life in there i'll be able to increase the pumps without the disruption

I'm about to have to deal with this issue 7'x3'x2' peninsula. I plan to use acrylic rods to elevate my rocks a little off the bottom and want to have 2" tall starboard bottom at either end of the tank and and sand in the middle one third of the tank.

Also have 2 mp60s and 2 gyre xf250s.

Uh, that's actually pretty cool. Very reef-natural effect. I think I'd keep it that way. Burrowing critters would love it.

I run a close loop with 2 RD3 230W pumps and 6 - 1" outlets on my 82"x32" peninsula as well as an MP60 on one side of the overflow end. This creates a chaotic gyre.

I have a 6' 220g penninsula tank, I tried running one XF280 and two WAVs on my overflow side, I found that after awhile there was not enough surface movement on the far side of the tank, and it had a semi permanent oil slick over there.

I eventually got a second gyre for that side of the tank and learned to live with seeing the pump and wires on the display side. I like being able to have the flow meet in random places, better for the SPS.

I have a 5' peninsula. 2x 4100 GPH Rossmont pumps on a Waver random patterns, in the back/bottom corners. Tank is bare bottom, so no worries about moving sand around.

Still not happy with flow. Added a 1900GPH pump on the outside end, high, stirs the surface, keeps from getting surface buildup there. Gotta have it, looking good or not.

What did you end up doing with this? My WB7225 is now wet and started cycling today. Still don’t have powerheads. Paralysis by analysis…
