Planning on getting the tideline AIO 7.1g to use as a nano reef. However, having issues with deciding what I would stock it with. Totally new to corals, so won't be looking for difficult corals such as acros and the like. Would like encrusting corals if possible with my novice knowledge, and am looking for an invert only tank. Any ideas? Tips and advice on filtration upgrades for the tank are much appreciated as well. (will be coming with a filter sock and I'm not sure what kind of return pump.

Thank you!

In a tank that small, I would only do soft corals. The reason being that you are new to corals, and a tank that small will require auto water changes (or very frequent water changes) or very frequent dosing and testing for alk and calcium. Plenty of people on here have nano tanks, but LPS and SPS corals in that size tank are often done as a challenge for experienced reef keepers

Nice, thank you for the help! Any personal softie favorites?

Green Nepthea, Pulsing leathers, rainbow ricordeas, toadstools, etc.

You can do encrusting or plating montipora or maybe something slow growing like a chalice. You just need to watch alk and calcium closely. Chalice corals would do well given they like lighting similar to many soft corals and are slow growing (i.e. will not drain calcium and alk rapidly)

I love plating monti so I will definitely consider that. Was also looking into ricordeas and toadstools. Thank you again for the help. While you're here lol, have any thoughts as to animals such as inverts? I was thinking sexy shrimp but that's as far as I've gotten.

I would start with some hardy softies figure it out for a little and then grab a Monti or favia coral. Just remember you only have a little room so if your going to start with some softies make a couple islands with them on it or they will take over tank. When people say only softies they mean till you get the hang of it. Toad stools are awesome but grow massive so zoanthids and mushrooms are always a cool first coral. Just plan ahead and it will save you money and headaches in the future. Enjoy the hobby its such a challenging rewarding thing that makes me both happy and frustrated at times. Most reefers stop at one year point because they don't plan ahead after a year your addicted like myself and many others.

Nice, thank you so much! I'll probably start with just one softie on an island to make room for future plating montis. I'm not a total stranger to the saltwater hobby, but I'm practically new to personal reefkeeping.
