The scary thing is, if you walk-in and buy, no warranty, at least on corals , I'm assuming the same for fish. Reason being you picked it . Not them. If they pick, then they ship it. I'd rather pick up. Very very rare I have corals die. You get to pick healthy corals.

I'd just go with a regular yellow Tang and paint it..

I get that to a 1%'er that $7K is what you find in your car's coin tray but to me I would need something quite a bit more special than just a strange color mutation to spend that kind of money (even if I had the resources of Jeff Bezos). I love the hobby, but I just can't get my head wrapped around the idea of "Mutated fish vs used Mustang GT" when debating what to spend my money on. There are also lots of fish in the $500 or less range that are far more unique looking and exotic than this one.

The funny thing is this isn't a fixed colouration. I've seen plenty of these tangs in the past subtly shift colour over time and heard of others that completely reverted to normal colours.

Local LFS has a couple of "blue koi" scopas for $100 each.
Kinda pretty. But meh.
Bluish (more grey) cast to the front of the fish. Nothing really exciting.
Maybe scopas will be the next "designer" fish.

At least they are not DNA mashup crossing them with jellyfish yet....

These colors seem to appear in a sub population of this species with stress. $7k for a yellow tang seem to be on the high side...

They have been available for years and never took off apart from the true fish collector or those that have more money than sense (there is definitely a difference between these two, one loves fish, the other showing off).
The green/brown/bluey scopas are much cheaper but still fetch silly money depending on how much they are coloured. It's really a case of trying your arm with pricing and it wouldn't surprise me if the one above sells for half of what they are asking or less.

That's the problem with these 'koi' tangs - the aberrant color isn't necessarily permanent. $7K is crazy, but even $700 would be a major bummer if you ended up with just a regular scopas.
