My friend ended up with a 72 Bowfront that has two bulkhead holes in the back and one on the bottom. It looks like it used to have an overflow box but that has since been removed. My friend wants to set it up and cap the hole in the bottom of the tank. I've expressed doubts as to whether or not I'd use it since I think piling rocks around the hole on the bottom may compromise it and cause it to fail. I am going over there to get a better look at it today. Am I reaching that this is a bad idea?

Sounds like it may have been a closed loop flow system.

As long as he did a good job capping the hole I wouldn't expect it to be a problem.

I didn't even think of closed loop systems - completely changed my perception of the tank. Thanks, @Brew12.
