Came across a video yesterday where a very successful reef keeper was talking about how he keeps his temp at 74.9-75.2. He said his main reasons are algae/cyano doesn’t prefer the lower temp but it doesn’t bother coral/fish. Do we need to rethink the 78-80 degree standard? What are your thoughts?

I think basing any decision off one youtuber isn't a recipe for success but my opinion is why change it if it's not broken? I run about 77 degrees Farenheit and do not have algae/cyano problems. So it's the same anecdote in the reverse.

There's also people on YouTube who think the earth is flat. Changing what is accepted to be an optimum setting for fear of algae or bacteria is silly. If that concerned just dose live phyto and manage parameters stricter.

I've tried 72-74, 75-77, 78-80, 81-83 ranges several times in several tanks over the years.
My tasks have always been the happiest in the 78-80 range. In this range I observe the best Coral growth, Coral extension, fish activity, minimal algae, stable parameters, etc.

Currently, I maintain 78.8 - 79.2.

Yeah that 78-80 seems like the sweet spot.

I live in south Florida and struggle to keep my tank temp under 80. I have to keep the house ac at 72 just to do that.

I keep my water at 77 it has fluctuations between 76-77.
