75 gal tank on second story

I’m just wondering how safe it is to put a 75 gal reef tank in the second story of my house. It sorta makes me nervous. I live in California so I know their building standards are good because of earthquakes and my house is fairly new 2004 what do you guys think? Thanks in advance

It depends on the floor joists. The ability to survive an earthquake isn’t really related to a sag, which causes a deflection, which makes your tank unlevel...... That’s what I would check for.

I don’t think a 75 will fall though your floor..... but that’s not the only thing go be concerned with

I your opinion do you think it is just too much risk I have room down stairs I just wanted it in my bed room

I guess in my mind I was thinking what if I had a waterbed I would think the builders whould take that in consideration but then again I don’t know.... that’s why I’m asking lol

You'll be fine! Weather you land on multiple with the tank and stand or just run along a single joist would be fine. I'd assume there engineered for second floor with 3/4 sub. I wouldn't be too concerned

It’s about deflection, which doesn’t apply to waterbeds. I am saying you should make sure the tank stays level. It will probably be fine, but I have no idea about your house..... so I say just have it checked out.

Water weighs 8.35 pounds per gallon so you have 626 pounds in a 75 gallon tank. Also add the sump’s capacity and your reservoir tank, do the calculation including the glass and cabinet and then make your decision.

Too many factors! Are you putting it closer to an exterior wall or in the middle of a room where the joists would flex (not likely) did your contract on use 1×2 for joists (not likely more like 2x8 minimum which would be engineered I joists most likely) you'll be fine if you run it along side , over a single or across multiple joists nothing will happen to your floor.

Unfortunately I don’t know how they built the house but I do think it will run across the floor beams. I was just asking for n general if this was safe or something I would not want to take a chance with

I have a 90g cube, my house has a basement so no solid floor, but I could check that it ran across several joist.

If I was you I would definate make sure you are putting it on a joist or two.
75g is still a fair bit of weight especially if that's not including the sump, stand and weight of the tank.
