What do u mean by u think black sand is causing ur hair algae problem? I have black sand and I haven't ran into that problem please elaborate. From my experience algae problems come from high nutrients like phosphate. I'm no expert but just from what I read is why I say this.

Highly unlikey to be the sand. What are your Phosphate readings?
To change out the sand, ya just scoop out the old, and use a big pvc pipe to put the new sand in. Drop the new sand down the pipe to where you want it to go. There will be a big ol smoke cloud but your not going to stop that, pvc will help alot in that area.

i feel like the black sand hold more detritus than a smaller grain sand would. i have a good amout of flow and i get algea build on my sand within 24 hrs of siphoning it. gfo is constantly running water changes 2 times a month and i cut back on lights a lot. feed only once a day now. so i was thinking maybe its the sand idk lol. i personally like the white sand but my girlfriend loved the look of the black lol. i want to change it but i dont want to make things worse. just looking for some advice.

Check phosphate levels because that's what's causing ur algae problem at least what I've read seems to say.
