Hey everyone! I'm gonna set up a 75g reef on New Year's Day. Will a 70g HOB and a 20g HOB be adequate filtration? I have a Reef Octopus 100 but I don't know if have all the parts (got it from a friend). Please no rude comments, thanks!

Throw up a couple of pictures, this would help out a bunch please

Are you going with fish only or reef. Just a question are you going with HOB for room reason?

I have a 72 and went with a CPR bacpak 2 and that filter worked really well. Then I switch over to a sump for the reason I want a bigger skimmer and all the equipment out of the tank and in the sump.

I don't have the room or the money. My friend gave me the 70g filter + the skimmer, so that's what I'm planning to use if I can get the skimmer working. If not, is wondering if I can use the filter I have in my 20g in addition. I want a mixed reef too

Any pictures of the skimmer and parts? RO HOBs are pretty simple and as long as you have the pump, you should be able to make it work. The filters aren't 100% necessary, but will be needed if you plan on running carbon or any filter media like that. If you do use the Marineland, I'd take the biowheels off. They are purely for nitrification purposes by creating an aerobic area for bacteria to populate (resulting in the production of nitrates) which you don't really want in a reef tank.

I'll go take a pic now. Not entirely sure if it has all the parts, but it definitely needs a cleaning.

Looks like everything is there! Just in case your friend didn't tell you, you adjust the skimmate production by raising or lower the collection cup. There is a small black nut that you loosen when you make adjustments, just make sure you tighten it properly when you're don't (don't ever tighten or you could break something). If you leave it too loose the cup will slip farther down and will usually end up overflowing... at least that's what mine did!

Thanks! If I have any questions can I pm you? Do you have the same skimmer as me?

I would recommend getting 2 aqua clear 120 filters and making one into a refugium with cheatomorpha inside and a small par38 bulb to hang over. For the other one BRS media bags with BRS ROX 0.8 carbon.
The cheatomorpha grows like weeds in this thing so dose any algee and keeps it out of my display

I'm guessing you have done freshwater before. A "filter" does not quite work the same in salt water as it does in fresh. There are 3 kinds of filtration; biological, chemical and mechanical. In fresh water a "filter" does all 3 there is a place for bacteria to grow( biological) they have a sponge or pad(mechanical) and typically carbon(chemical). In salt water the biological requirement is much much higher that is why we use live rock. It is recommended to add 1lb/1gal of water for proper biological filtration. If you choose to add less you essentially have a smaller tank and should stock accordingly. Considering the amount of live rock in the system the "filter" will do very little to biologically filter the tank. They are good however for a place to run filter floss and or some carbon though for your chemical and mechanical filtration needs, but having more than one won't really do much.

The other thin g that would set a fresh water tank aside from a salt water tank is the built in ability to surface skim the tank. Due to the large amount organics that occur in a salt water tank if you don't have a surface skim ability you will eventually end up with what looks like an oil slick on the surface of your water. Surface skimming can be handled a number of ways. Some hob skimmers offer this feature, not sure if yours does or not, there is attachments that you can put on some hob "filters" or you could use an overflow box and a sump. Hope that this helps.

+1 on the aquaclear filters( now fluval) they have a large media rack that you can put anything you want in(including a mini fuge) and you can buy a surface skimmer attachment for them on amazon for less than $20.

Never had a fresh water tank I just did a lot of research during my cycle period. It was a lot to take in so it really helped me be patient and wait.
30g tank build:
T5 ati blue+, purple+, actinic & E5 blue pop
5w desktop grow light (fuge light)
Vortech Mp-10 powerhead
Cobalt heater
Nano protein skimmer w/ 45g mod,
Stellar air pump and 1 qt collection jar
Aqua clear 20 refugium:
Cheatomorpha
1/4 lbs rubble rock
Pre-filter
Gate mod (no sails)
Aqua clear 50 skimmer:
Surface skimmer mod
Pre-filter
Bio-sponge
BRS media bag with BRS
ROX 0.8 & GFO
35 lbs live rock
15 lbs sand
9 kill switch power strip
Only thing I need to buy is the vortech back-up battery
Sorry I haven't cleaned my glass in a couple weeks looking a little neglected lol
I've thought out the biological, chemical, and mechanical to an extreme to help with excess nutrients and clear water. There are endless possibilities with these aqua clear filters and I think I've pushed mine to the limit. Alot of learning involved now I'm building a 75g AIO tank.
