Best identifier is the underside of its foot and the shape.

Nassarius have a forked tail and Whelk's just have a rounded base.

Thank you so much @ReeferWarrant ! It may take a while for me to ID based on the foot because I only see him every 3 weeks or so. Ive not seen it on the glass yet, only on the mermaids fans.

Next time I see him, I’ll get it to attach to the glass so I can see the foot clearly.
 
I agree, yours looks lighter colored than mine too. I read some Whelks have a darker almost tattooed look which mine had.
 
You got lucky as it is a Whelk. Actual, the best identifier is ...... If you look at the texture of their snouts, there is a specific pattern "tattooed" onto the flesh of the Whelk. Also, the Whelk has a protective shell on its tail that it uses to seal itself in its shell when in danger. This gives it a water tight seal.
Nassarius will have a solid flesh colored snout and no shell at the tail
