Hey,

I'm setting up a new 80 (48L x 24W x 16H) with a 40 gallon sump.

Planning on having mixed coral, but LPS/soft dominant.

Was using this guide as a guideline: https://www.tropicalfishkeeping.com...h-compatability-creating-stocking-list-38579/

A (2 units):
1x Shrimp goby (w/ pistol shrimp)
1x Sand sifting goby
1x Blenny - any recommendations on which one?
1x Mandarin (eventually, when have enough copepods)

B (~4 units):
1x Banggai cardinal
2x Clownfish
1 x flame angel
something blue ... chrysiptera damsels? chromis? fairy wrasse?

C (2-4 units):
1x Tang (not sure which yet ... maybe kole)
something yellow ... 1x yellow tang? foxface? longnose butterfly?

Under the system in the link above this would be 8-10 "fish units". How does this look for aggression, bio-load, etc? Hoping to get a mix of colours (blues, yellows, reds).

Thanks in advance (no water or sand in tank yet)

So... Looking at your list, I would say off the top of my head, probably fine.... Over a year or more.
Now.. never really liked any formula that says X fish per gallon, foot of tank whatever. Reason for that is there are just so many variables. All fish have personality and can throw the whole "formula" out if whack.
Couple things I WOULD advise is this. Any Tang(s) you choose to add, best to do it simultaneously and probably last as they can be very territorial. Especially conspecifics ie yellow, purple, sailfin tangs etc.
Damsels can also be little buggers. Clownfish are damsels. Choose carefully, have a definite plan, and follow the plan.
Ask as many questions as possible and GO SLOW!!! Wish I had $1 for every time I had a person ask about how to fix an improper plan.. there are literally hundreds of threads here on exactly this topic.
Best of luck, and keep the questions coming!!

I don't like Zebrasomma tangs in short tanks like this.

For yellow, yellow assessor, yellow coris wrasse, and yellow tilefish give you the color in a more appropriate size for that tank.

Chrysiptera damsels are well-behaved for damsels.

Thanks for the tips, I think ill drop the damsels then. How do you think this list looks in terms of "bio load"? How many chromis do you think I could add?

For yellow, yellow assessor, yellow coris wrasse, and yellow tilefish give you the color in a more appropriate size for that tank.

Thanks for that, the tilefish looks interesting.

A personal favorite fish of mine are the zebra bar gobies. Very attractive and hardy. They do best in a small group, 3 or more. They are jumpers though so you would want some type of cover on the tank if you don't have one all ready.

thanks, will have a look at these. love gobies

Im thinking this now, thoughts on bio-load, aggression? This would be ~8-9 "fish units", 40-50 inch of fish, up to 12 fish in total

Group A - Add First:
1-2x Shrimp goby (w/ pistol shrimp)
1x goby .. not a sand sifter
1x Blenny
1x royal gammy dottyback or dartfish

Group B -1 - Add Second:
1x Banggai cardinal
1 x green chromis
2 x Clownfish

Group B -2 - Add Third:
1 x flame angel
1 x coral beauty

Group C: Add Last
1x yellow tang

Eventually ...

1x Mandarin

+ inverts

Dottyback can be aggressive.

Tank is too small for 2 dwarf angels.

Tank is too small for yellow tang.

Is the "royal gammy dottyback" a royal gramma or a royal dottyback? Gramma is fine, the dottyback is aggressive. If you want a dotty, go with the orchid.

I agree with @eatbreakfast about the angels and tang. I would choose one of those angels, and replace the tang with a yellow wrasse (H. chrysus).

I’ve got a 75 with a foxface, kole, and yellow who are all happy together. There is one anthias and looking for 2 more. Think I’ll be maxed out at that point.

It is a Royal Gamma (not Dottyback sorry). I'll drop the yellow tang, not tied to it, would the yellow assessor be ok with the Royal Gamma?

what the heck is a fish unit? I didn't follow the link.

Gramma and assessors are fine together.
