I'm getting two 800 hog powerhead a for my 39 gallon reef. Wait now stop and read on! I'm only using one but the price of two was cheaper than one so I'm only using one! Should I use both or one and will one still be too much? I need info on what you would see me do! Thanks for the answers well received!

all sort of depends.... on what do you plan on keeping, softy, LPS, SPS, mixed?

I looked up a thing on line that said divide your gph of all pumps by gallons of tank and if it is in the 5-10 low 15-25 mid 30-50+ high anything above 60 extreme so I got 27.6 so I'm in mid to slightly high but I'd call it mid...

for something that small you're in the 390gph on the power-heads total...

No way I had a four hundred on mine a while back and it left dead spots and algae/debris/fish waste all over I needed like double thanks but I'm not ping that small man.

Okay I can respect that I'm not trying to argue with you but that's what the number show... issues with algae, detritus, fish waste, completely depends on husbandry the type of fish you have, how much you're feeding, cleanup crew, a bunch of other factors, I wouldn't necessarily contribute those factors to the amount of flow in the tank however flow is required to maintain a healthy tank.

Those numbers are based on turnover, whats in the tank, not turn over through the sump back to the tank those are completely different calculation and based on the fact that you're going to be running a mixed reef with soft corals and LPS, 390 rounded up to 400 should be enough but that's just my opinion.

I was running a 1000gph on my 20L (sps dom) Wasn't just one big pump but a few smaller pumps. I feel that more pumps with less gph are better then fewer pumps with more gph.I was able to hit all the dead zones with 4 pumps better then two. Even though you would have (1600gph) with two pumps I bet you still will have dead spots in your tank because you can only point them two directions. I'm guessing these power heads are from china off of ebay?

I wouldn't go any where near 1600gph if your keeping a mixed reef.

Well thanks but I want to say my failed setup with a four hundred had 2 clowns 2 damsels and 3 softies 2 Lps 2 sps I had a problem with detritus and dead spots due to flow to ava

Not from china but from South America and yes why and if you have something against eBay so be it I could care less. But even if they were from China how does that affect there effects in a reef habitat. Like really? Jbjs on eBay re from china so criticize them not to be rude or argue I'm just not seeing evidence or facts but bias from all of you...

Lol... I have nothing against china.. I run jeabos on my tank. and 4 nano pumps wouldn't be to much..(you hide the pumps behind rock work)

I already purchased the earlier this morning so I have a little nano piece of **** that I could use maybe a 300 gph idk could I use an 800 and the 300? 300 behind rock work and 800 in front? Recommendations.

I'm confused. You are asking for help then ignoring everyone's suggestions and opinions.

Both 800gph pumps running in a 39 gallon reef is perfect for a mixed reerf. My 20g tall mixed reef has 2x MP10s cranked up to 80% which is over 2500gph when both are on in a tank half the size and everything is super happy. While it is primarily SPS, it is probably 1/3 LPS and softies and they are growing much better with the high flow then when I had just 700gph on the tank. For 39g, 1600gph is not too much flow at all...

If you only want one pump, then use one - but 800gph in a nearly 40g tank probably isn't going to be enough to prevent dead spots and adding a smaller secondary pump would certainly help.

thats only 20x turnover and if you are wanting sps, you need to look at 50x IMO. I have a pair of WP40's in a 66 gallon tank. with both on high, that is 6800 GPH max...

now, I have them dialed back to about 2500 GPH max... so that puts me at about 36x turnover plus the 10x or so I have thru my sump. I still have some dead spots, but im not blowing the tissue off my corals either. this is a mixed reef with

Ovary so I'm thinking both 800 on opposite sides one blowing behind aquascape and one blowing in front it that good? An also I'm not ignoring any of you it just the fact that none of you have any expirences so I can't trust it because I don't want to blow my coral all over the tank
