Nothing good comes in this hobby fast. I learned the hardway When I went fast I must have crashed my smaller tank 4 times withing a year. Loosing everyfish. Which sucked. I now take it slow and am having much better success. I reccomend not using his live rock or sand due to the fact that it could have something you do not want in it. i reccomend using new bags of live sand and dead rock so you can limit the amount of pests introduced into the tank. Then you can add what BRS did to their new tank I think it is biro spira which is benneficial bacterial which quickstarts the bacteria growing.

well while we're on the subject of that I have another dilemma.. I'm buying the tank tomorrow and moving it to my parents house.. I move back to school the second week of August and will have to move it again to my apartment there. My plan was to just get rid of his sand and run it barebottom for a month with his liverock and then when I move it add my own new dry sand.. I've heard not to use livesand because it will cause the tank to cycle again.

Another option would be to slowly sell everything out of it the whole month of July and then completely start over in August with the money I get from selling all the livestock, coral, and live rock..

Any opinions on this? I love the idea of starting over and making it mine but it just seems dumb to do that when I have a mature tank right in front of me.

Trust me it is always better to start over. You have control of what is being put in there. I would just sell what ever you can but do not buy anything until you move it to its final resting location.
