9 Weeks FALLOW Might Have Been A Waste

Guys, I was dealing with an outbreak of what might have been Brook that wiped out my entire tank except for 5 Chromis, 1 Naso, and 1 Longnose Hawkfish. 9 weeks and 2 days FALLOW with nothing but 3 shrimp, anemones, and coral while my fish have been in copper and spot free in a QT tank. Released them back into the tank and I see 1 spot on a fin of 1 Chromis and a couple spots on the back fin of my Naso.

Is this really happening or am I just living a nightmare. Is FALLOW not even the answer anymore?

This may be my exit from the hobby. I don't have the mental power anymore to even think of removing this fish for another unsuccessful FALLOW period or breaking down this tank.

Are the spots raised and cottony/fibrous looking? Could just be lympho from the stress of being moved.

Let’s hope it’s Lympho! I had to go fallow for 75 days three (3) separate times in the same 6’ tank; so I know your pain. Now I just nuke my entire DT for 30 days with CopperSafe if need be— rock, sand, everything.

If it's just ich your fish can live with it. I wouldnt get out of a hobby over ich. If you dont want to do the fallow period again just feed with rich foods. Lots of hobbiests do it....actually in reality more than we would like to think.

If its brook or velvet I would say start the fallow amd treatment over.

It's very frustrating to go fallow and have something survive.

Maybe let it go for a week and see. Then after that see if another fallow is in your will or not.

Honestly, it's a mystery. Started out by looking like a very serious case of ich, but then by the time the fish were on their last day or 2 it looked like Brook. In QT I treated with Prazipro and Cupramine. All the spots went away. Who knows.

On the Chromis it looks that way. Not so much on the Naso.

I believe copper can suppress Brook but not cure it. So if it is Brook...it would make sense. It suppressed it....spots disappear....out of copper...comes back.

Sorry for your troubles. I know how frustrating this is. Possibly posts some pictures for us to see?

Two things here...

If the fish have brook then the treatments you administered unfortunately wouldn't eradicate it. Like mentioned it could have suppressed it and now you're dealing with an outbreak once removed from medications.

Another reason the fallow period could have failed is the timeframe for one strain of ich is 76 days to complete life cycle, round up and say twelve weeks.

Someone asked for a clarification: I was 'nuking' my FOWLR with CopperSafe due to Marine Velvet. I use a Hanna checker every other day and have more or less learned how to keep the therapeutic levels between 1.5 and 2.0, despite sand and rocks. I don't really have any clean-up crew-- because crabs, sails, and such wouldn't make it. But I must say, all my several kinds of fish have seemed bullet-proof... have never lost one fish due to the copper.

9 weeks =/= the time for fallow to be effective which is 76 days

I was 11 days short of the 76. Honestly if the darn thing didn’t starve in 65 days would 76 really make a difference?

Anyway, I’ll continue monitoring and report back.

76 days has failed for me on several occasions that I have utilized the practice. Didn't come back immediately but it did come back with no additions during each process.

I did no further treatment other than 24/7 UV and have lost a few but the remaining are living with the parasite. Not willing to tear apart the tank again and no longer have a good sized QT housing tank. (that was a nightmare in controlling the ammonia also)
