Is having a single 90 degree elbow in a drain really that big a problem? I'm setting up a 35g tank with a 3/4 inch return and I just don't think I am going to be able to get the return through a gate valve into the inlet in the sump using 45 degree elbows. There's an emergency drain as well and that's pretty much a straight drop into the sump and for a tank this size I think a 3/4 inch drain will still provide enough flow so I'm thinking.... yeah fine? This is my first set up I'm kind of stalled here by if I can solve this one problem I think I can stack up my rocks and fill this thing this week so I'm inclined just to go for it. Alternatively I was thinking I might try to heat and bend a section of pipe and swage-fit the ends to form a custom elbow or something? That seems like that might work too.

A lot of the technical information I'm seeing indicates that I'm NOT really sacrificing more than a few percentage points worth of flow....

I think I'm just going to do it this way... and do it some other way if for some reason this doesn't work out.

Yep, even in large aquariums, 90 degrees can be used

Thanks! I'm doing this 35 as a practice run on a 120 I bought but plumbing is just not something I've done much of so I'm learning this part.

Just plumbed my sump into my basement, I'm an electrician, not a plumber so I hear ya... 90 should be fine in a drain line...

Ok yeah this is just so much simpler than all the Dr. Seuss Super Mario B.S. that I was trying to pull off with half a dozen 45 degree elbows. Thanks for the help!
