Ok so I just started a new 90 gallon and it has been about 3 weeks now and it did a huge diatom bloom and now all the sudden the water has like brown particles in it which makes the water very cloudy almost like air bubbles but after shining a light through the water while all pumps have been shut down for around an hour you can see floating particles also the water wants to foam really bad if I turn the skimmer on it looks like someone put dish detergent in the tank but it’s built into the wall so no one in the house messes with it besides me any suggestions will help I just put a filter sock in the sump new Triton trigger series and that was a b to fit in there but after 10 hours I’ve had to change it twice because it gets to brown I used the rock from my old 125 that was dormant for about a year and then soaked in vinegar twice and rinsed each time again any advice will be great [emoji106]. Thanks,

Start running carbon to help polish the water. It should really help to get the impurities out of the water.

Just started carbon and some filter floss a long with the socks today so hopefully this does help I’ve just never seen a bloom like this

I think Bruce it right a bacterial bloom, unless you maybe have leathers in there some times when they shed they will do that but that's pretty thick try carbon

Socks, skimmer + carbon. Let them do the heavy lifting. Wash and change socks often. What would we do with out modern conveniences.

Silt from sand?

Get filter floss, its dirt cheap and really helps.

Random question, do you have a sump room? How are you accessing your equipment?

Possibly a heterotrophic bacterial bloom.

I have put two socks in there two bags of chemi pure two pieces of filter floss and the socks turn brown within 6 or less hours and I can’t run the slimmer all it does is over flow almost out of the sump

Pic of the sock after a 6 hours and the water out of the socks just keep foaming like skim

Its a algae bloom, I had this happen to one of my buddy tank I setup. You will need a UV sterilizer and if its a good one in 24 hours you should have clear water! Good luck.

I've also experienced a phytoplankton (algae) bloom - one thing that can help confirm that would be to siphon out a couple of gallons into a _white_ bucket, then take a look at under natural light. One glance at that green water told me the nature of my invader . . .

The UV sterilizer turned the tide - mine wasn't a great one, the "Green Killing Machine" ... but it did the job over a few days.

Update ok so never used a Uv sterilizer before so I took all of your advice and ran out and got one and it’s been on for 24hrs and the looks really good now just a few more days and we should be 100% thanks for all of your help[emoji106]

Glad it worked out for y'all, trust me if someone told me about the uv when I was troubleshooting things. It would have been done much faster! Lol
