I am jumping on the band wagon and will be adding a 55 gallon sump to my 90 gallon. I know I know that is huge for a 90, but I iam going to start saving for a bigger tank. The 90 is not plumbed so I will be using an overflow box. My question is, what size return pump should I be looking for? Any advice or suggestions are welcome.

You could use an eheim 1260 or 1262. Either should work fine for you

Thank you Steeler!! Kinda expensive. lol what GPH should I be looking for?

A 55 will be a great size for your 90 I think, plus room to grow as you said. I have a 29g sump on my 90 and wish I did the 55 instead (I had an extra 55 gallon tank but it wouldnt' fit in my stand). Have fun setting it up!

Thank you so much! Grabbed an extra at Petco...$1 per gallon....gotta love it!!! I am actually gonna build a very low to the ground platform for this sump and put it behind the tank!!!

What is critical is the flow rate of you overflow box. What is that rated for? You don’t want to exceed the rating of the overflow box. Now that being said, I’m assuming this is an external overflow box…………..I don’t recommend them………..unless you like floods.

I originally started with an external box, and after two floods, that was enough. I went with a Glass-holes kit. I also have a 90 gallon tank and have a 1500 gph Glass-holes kit with a MAG 9.5 as a return pump.

A cheaper pump would be a Danner mag. Either 9.5 or a 12 depending on plumbing. ;)

Well, that is another whole can of worms. I am not sure about that either?
