I just registered on the site and this app is hands down my favorite app. I recently got the bug to get my tank up and running again. Well it was always running, but it was in a sorry state to say the least. 2 years with no heat and no powerheads. My neglect was caused by a move, a baby, a new job, and a house with too many projects to allow me any bit of relaxation, or money for that matter.

When I moved my fish didn't make the trip after getting things set up. My halides were well past their prime and a burned out ballast caused me to light the tank with only actinic and moon light. My rodi system was in need of replacement and my fresh water reservoir was leaking which made it very hard to get enough water to do a water change.

After two years of doing top offs with not the best quality water my wife told me to get the tank going again or get rid of it. I took that as a green light to spend some money.

I replaced my old coral life light fixture with 2 250 watt MHs with 2 AI Hydra 52 HDs and cleaned the glass in the first time in months. (Let there be light).

To my surprise I found an acan colony. A cluster of button polyps. A diminished hammer with 5 little heads, a fingernail sized piece of leather cabbage. Also a few hermits and my serpent star that has survived 3 moves and is about 10 years old.

But I lost a lot, bubble coral, zoas, frog ponds, to name a few. Only good thing is all majano are dead and gone. (Majano wand did not help me at all.)

I ordered a 6 stage rodi system and did a 50% water change.

I knew I shouldn't rush things but I did and ordered from liveaquaria: a clean up crew, with 30 hermits, 30 snails, 3 peppermint shrimp, 2 emerald crabs, 1 Sally light foot crab, an arrow crab and a coral banded shrimp. Along with 6 chromis, a mini flame angle, mini yellow tang, 2 clowns, and a mini blue hippo tang. I also got a frag pack expecting LPS but they were SPS which worries me because I have never had much luck with them.

I have over 100+ lbs in my 90 gallon. I am running two cheap koralia powerheads. My return pump is weak and to say I need more flow is an understatement.

I brought a water sample to my lfs and was to my parameters looked good but after adding the bio load I have some serious cyano issues.

Time for an overhaul but after spending 1500 on LEDs and a new rodi system. I need to spread out my spending.

Next on my list is APEX with WAV kit = 1350 after tax.

I drool over these hard plumbed tank with the compartmentalized sumps. I currently do not dose and only have an ATO for stability.

I've decided to go with a couple Neptune DOS units for dosing 2part as well as auto water changes.

I also plan to build a new stand to fit the equipment I want. I want a better sump with a fudge and zeovit and gfo reactor. Hard plumbing lights. The works. I'm also sick of looking at my overflow taking up valuable space in the tank. I'm not sure if I can drill or need a new tank all together but that is down the road. I rally like the rimless look.

A lot to think about. But these pics are what's going on right now.

I was told once because I don't have a filtration system I need a lot of rock. But I feel like it is too much.

Well stay posted as I hope to keep these guys alive.

Consider trying some Chemiclean for the cyano. While the product will not fix an underlying nutrient issue Chemiclean will knock down that cyano.

You could definitely pull some of the rock if you feel inclined to change up the scape.

Congrats on getting the tank back on track, I bet it feels good. I am confident you'll like the lighting, I have the same fixture and for the most part they are great fixtures.

I think I will pull some rock, not a lot though. I like how I have more shelves vs walls right now. But I am getting sick of looking at the overflow box inside the tank. I might try to build the rock up to hide it better. Or would it be possible to get a smaller hang on unit?

I like the lights, i have it on the lunar setting but I don't like a complete blackout during the new moon phase. I still need to rent a PAR meter to see how I'm doing in that regard.

I think my intensity might be a bit high.

I will pick up come Chemiclean. I've been doing frequent water changes which knocks it down for a little bit but grows back real quick.

Thanks for the advice.

It definitely costs a lot but i hope it will save me money in the long run. Not to mention the value of my time dosing and testing. It will give me piece of mind being able to vacation with the auto feeder. The possibilities are endless.

Woke up this morning and my acan colony dissolved. And another sps is browned with no polyps showing.

I'm not sure if the cause. Did a 10% WC

What are your water parameters?
PH
Temperature
Salinity
Ammonia
Nitrite
Nitrate
Phosphate
Alkalinity
Magnesium
Calcium
Flow

Finally made it to the fish store to test my water. I really need a test kit. They didn't test everything.

Temp 74F
Salinity 1.025
Ammonia 0
Nitrate +4
Phosphate 55
ALK 7.8

Acan almost completely gone. I have a few small heads hanging on. Acro still brown but polyps are out.

Cyano is still prevalent in the system. I had to return the APEX and WAV system because I had a deal fall through. So I picked up a Jebao PP8. I only got one because I still plan on picking up the Neptune WAVs in the next couple weeks. Definitely better then the two Hydor Korelias I'm using now

I've had the new powerhead on for the last 8 hours and am going to do a 30% WC to bring down my phosphates and nitrates.

It was suggested to me to start using bio pellets to keep nitrates down. I don't know much about it so I will have to do some research.

Man I wish my apex was here.

It has been 1 month since adding frags and I have had zero growth.

While a the store I picked up a clip for my phone to filter out the blue.

With clip

Looks good!

55 phosphate isnt right. Even 5.5 is through the roof

A Lot of Questions

I did a 25 gallon water change, my water looks pretty yellow next to fresh rodi.
ac5c0d34e2b17d4094e36b1dc84540b4.jpg

I noticed my blue tang who had a bit of a swollen cloudy eye is looking good. 100% even.

Then I saw my flame angel with a big swollen eye. Looks nasty. Couldn't get a good pick. Going to the fish store to get some test kits tomorrow to monitor my nitrates and phosphates. Only recent change was adding the jebao pump to increase my flow.

I'm worried because I have no qt, I hope to build one to see what is going on. I'm guessing I'm going to have to trap all my fish. And set up a 30 gallon. I skimmed through humblefish's article about qt but I will have to look a bit closer to get it going.

Will 30 gallon qt work for:

6 chromis
1 clown
1 yellow tang
1 hippo blue tang
1 flame angel.

All the fish a very small yet, biggest one is about the size of a silver dollar.

Are the Hanna checkers cheaper to use in the long run or are manual test kit more economical for long term use?

I am flying blind right now and need to get something. I found an old calcium test kit and found out I'm at 420. I think that is good. I feel like I'm running the tank a little cold at 74. The heater is set to 78 on the unit. Should I slowly raise the temp to 78-79?

Yes a lot of questions indeed.

Hey, those swollen eyes might be fluke. I had a Coral Beauty that had the same thing also half of its fins were gone. Looked online and in forums, the best this is to do a freshwater dip for them (RO or Distilled Water) for 7 minutes and you may see some white things drop off of them.

Any BTW, I just got a Hydra 26 on my Innovative Marine 40 and I'm starting my lights out on this intensity.

Oh, and FYI you may want to put your Deep Red (DR) and Green (G) to 0% because those colors promote unwanted algae from what was told by a few people withing the forum and my LFS said Red Sea recommends running those two at 0%.

Thanks for the light update reefpress. I really don't have much algae growth at the moment but I think I will turn them down a bit to prevent an outbreak.

Went to the store to buy a trap. They were sold out but they borrowed me theirs. Flame angel's eye in not looking any better today and he seems to be hiding. Got a low q pic.

Since I was borrowing stuff they lent me their PAR meter too.

Also bought some chemiclean to rid myself of the remaining cyano in the tank.

A new bucket of salt. I got bioactive salt to help keep nitrate and phosphate levels down. Not sure if it is BS. But it cost an extra 20 bucks.

I also picked up a phosphate Hanna checker. I wanted to get the nitrate one too but they were out.

I hope to get things under control

My surviving acans are looking better after the WC last night.
