Hey everyone

I've been in the hobby for quite a while with some breaks here and there for college and different house moves but in most of my tanks I've had large fish so I'm looking to go a bit different with this tank by stocking with more small schooling type fish. Before I jump in I have a few questions.
I know for clowns you either want 2 or 10 plus to avoid any aggression but are there any other rules of thumb for smaller fish?
I am thinking some clowns and fire fish but what are some other good smaller fish that would be recommended?
How many smaller fish would a 90 gallon reef set up support?

Thanks in advance for all the help

A 90 gallon isn't necessarily small, more like mid range size. That said there are a wide variety of fish that could work in a 90 gallon. I would recommend switching the Firefish for a Basslet (ie Royal Gramma, Black Cap) as firefish are easily bullied and are often targets of more assertive fish. a Basslet on the other hand can generally hold it's own.

As for other fish that will work in a 90 gallon tank:

Wrasses (ie Halichoeres, Peaceful Fairy and Flasher Wrasses)
Bristletooth Tang (ie Kole, Tomini, Two Spot, Squaretail, White Tail)
One Spot Foxface
Pygmy or Dwarf Angel (Be aware that they can nip at corals though)
Cardinalfish
Basslets
Gobies
Blennies
Hawkfish

I'm sure there are others I am missing but that is a pretty good list

Awesome thanks for the advice. My bad I more ment smaller fish for the tank haha. Those all are solid suggestions and will for sure take them into consideration. How many fish would be appropriate for that size tank if I stick with the smaller fish?

Clowns - 1 pair... and that's it
Firefish - singly, or a pair if you happen to get a male and female that get along

Possible social (group) fish:
pajama cardinals
scissor tail dartfish
zebra dartfish
dispar, ignitus, carberryi anthias
chalk bass
Chrysiptera genus damsels

Possible pairs:
bangai cardinal, if you happen to get a male and female that get along
dragonettes, if you get a male and female
long nose hawks
orchid dottyback

I have a 90 gallon and I only keep 5 fish in it. That said, it could easily handle 8-10 fish particularly if you are going with smaller ones.

I think he is saying he wants to stock with small fish in his tank.....not that his 90 gallon is a small fish tank :):D

I've got 9 threadfin blue eyed cardinals. They're not aggressive at all and tend to stay together
