Hello Reefers,
I'm a little late starting this thread as I started my build on January 2nd of this year. It just so happens that the morning after I finally filled up the tank, my wife gave birth to our first child.
The tank was an upgrade from my Biocube 29, so some of the corals that are larger to start in this tank are transplants from there. The tank had some periods of ups and downs in the beginning, mainly due to my insistence on attempting to save a powder blue tang from Petco and not quarantining it. It succumbed to ich and most of my inhabitants became infected. Fortunately, I was able to clear it up with a combination of kick-ich and Polyp Labs Medic. The downside, however, was that the kick-ich ticked off a number of my corals and even lead to some coral death. The good news is I did not lose any other fish.
The skimmer and carbon being off for three weeks with limited water changes didn't sit well with the tank, and I ended up with a dinoflagellate infestation that was a serious pain to get rid of--but it was overcome with peroxide dosing and three day periods of darkness. The tank has been ich and dinoflagellate free since the second week of March.
Underneath I keep things pretty simple. In the first chamber of the sump I run my protein skimmer, a filter sock, and my carbon reactor. The carbon only runs for 6 hours per day, as it is on the same timer as the refugium light. The second chamber is the refugium and chaeto is the only beneficial algae I grow. The third chamber is the return pump and a GFO reactor. The reactor is there for emergencies but is not run on a day to day basis.
