Hello and welcome to r2r,hope all is well.
What I suggest is you start a new thread and get more eyes on it Interested.
In that thread give some helpful info like...
How long tank set up for.
Have you checked parameters and if so what are they.
Do you ro water changes and how much
Do you use tap water and use a declorinator
Rinse filters out In dirty tank water and not straight tap water.
And just useful helpful info like this as these be all the questions most will ask you

Good luck

Welcome and perhaps you Can share a little bit more information about the tank. Perhaps a picture or two and will be better able to lend some advice. And they rate thanks for taking care of your mom And her tank

Welcome to R2R!!

I would suggest to test the water to see if the water is to dirty and ammonia
All system need maintenance even fresh water. I nice vacuum of the gravel bed if you have one, and a water change for fresh water.
Are you running in filtration? if so, run some carbon to clean the water and filter out contaminants.

This will give you a start. :)
