So I sell corals on craigslist from time to time, and this morning a teacher from a local highschool contacted me about some of my zoas, and i want to make sure I can come up with some hardy corals to donate to them ,being its for kids in highschool,I want them to enjoy it as much as the rest of us.So I am wondering what you guys think would be some great corals for the classroom?

I got some gsp and some zoas im going to donate to the class I was just trying to think of easier stuff ,maybe some pulsating xenias

Kudos to you! Such a nice gesture. :)

Mushrooms are easy and usually multiply fairly fast.

The teacher asked me how important a skimmer is?where would you guys put a skimmer on the list of must haves?

I need all the softies that are hardy you guys can think of that still makes a person say wow thats cool or look at the colors in that

As a teacher with a class tank... thank you for doing this! Without caring community members like yourself, special things like a reef tank in the classroom wouldn’t be possible.

Depends on tank size, fish load, and maintenance routine really. If a smaller tank, 40g and under, with only a couple of fish, I think going without a skimmer would not be an issue.

Amazing! Great opportunity to spread the reef bug. As mentioned by some already, softies and other easier to care for corals would be the most prudent, not only from a general maintenance stance, but even more cost effective in the long term. You wouldn't want to give them a bunch of high demand corals that would cause them to incur more equipment/maintenance costs...unless people want to start donating equipment/time. Huge props for helping out!

The tank is a 125 they have 4 chromis in it,I have not asked how many fish they were planning on doing in it,I just want to make sure they get to enjoy it like we all do and learn a bit ,with out a crash,do the corals put a lot of load on the skimmers ?i always believed it was more of a waste remover

Corals won't add to the bioload unless they are (over)feeding the tank regularly, which really isn't necessary. A skimmer is not a must for a reef tank. It helps to reduce maintenance/water changes, but a tank does not need it if there is a sufficient amount of live rock and sand.

See this tank. Its my tank

No sump or skimmer. Just 2 hang on backs and power heads. hope that answers your question.

Nice, thanks for sharin!g that should help inspire them more

I would be careful what type of zoa you would bring into a public school with palytoxins possibly in play.

Kids do the strangest things.

Not a stretch to think a kid would pluck a zoanthid and stick it in his best friends ham sandwich, thinking it would be funny until the ambulance shows up from his best friend getting palytoxin poisoning.

That would be palyothoa, not zoanthids. But you bring up a good point.

I'm probably the only person on this forum that can't keep zoas and mushrooms alive. I find Dendro extremely hardy corals and other than spot feeding a bit each day, they're easy to care for. Mine have survived crazy swings in ph, high and low salinity, algae blooms, and even fish nipping. They don't required expensive lighting either because they're non-photosynthetic. As my avatar shows, they are colorful and even look a bit like anemones with their long tentacles, which many kids think are cool. Just my two cents...but I'm bias when it comes to the looks of Dendros. :)
