Hello again everyone,
I have had my tank up and running for about 6 -7 months. The two clowns I have seem to be very happy. The only corals at the moment are a torch coral and some feather dusters (not intended, a hitch hiker from the torch). The only other inhabitants is the clean up crew (a crew of about 10 hermit crabs, 4 nassarius snails and two emerald crabs. There are only a few other fish on the list as well as a small list of corals that will be added at some point (could be a long time). The fish are a royal gramma basslet, a blue green chromis or two and possibly a diamond watchman goby or sailfin blenny. The corals are going to be an assortment of zoas, acans, plate corals and ricordea. Things of that nature, im still very much learning here so I have no idea what I will end up doing.
At any rate that is just a little info on my tank, if I left anything out that will be of importance let me know. I guess one other thing that I will add is what I would like out of things (should make more sense by the end. I work 12 hour shifts and am at home the tail end of the day and at the beginning so I would like lights that allow me to enjoy things at night while I am there. I have a H.O.B filter because a sump is just not possible for my set up. It has been working well in the beginning for me.
Now on to the questions. I don't want to annoy with this question, I have done a search but the things I have found are for different situations (fish and corals, goals in general). As far as my lighting schedule I just want to see if this will work out with no issues (or what will work better). I was thinking of having my blues come on around 600 0r 630 am, the whites will follow ramping up to full on after a 30 min ramp at 800 or 830 am. The whites would remain on until 700 or7830 pm where they will fade out to off over 30 min. The blues would fade down at 800 or 830 at which point they will have a "moonlight" period for about 2 -3 hours, at which point the system will go dark.
The only other question I have is in regards to my filtration set up. I have it set up to where the open compartment has a filter pad at the bottom. On top of this pad is two media bags filled with carbon (BRS ROX 0.8) and one with Seachem PhosGuard. The instructions for the carbon say 1 Tbs per 10 gallons (I have a 30 gallon system) so I have 3 Tbs in the bag. One of my issues is that the carbon floats in the housing, I have placed a smaller piece of my dry rock in the bag to keep it down. Will this create a problem? The other question is because of the small amount the two bags are not stacked as layers but they sit side by side. I know that this will create a situation where all of the water will flow through both bags. Is there a better way that I can set things up to get most if not all the water to flow through both bags? I hope that this makes sense, I did not know the effects of having the bags filled with more of the two medias (beyond recommended amounts). That way they could both become a layer. I will include a picture of my current orientation so that you can see if thats helpful.
