I have a couple tanks running, a 70 mixed reef and a 55 full of live rock that I place corals in when they don’t do well in the 70. The 55 has a skimmer on it but that’s it, no other filtration. Lights are a 4 bulb no name with older ATI bulbs in it. I can not get the shield off it so no bulb changes. No water changes and no fish, just some shrimp.
The 70 has a sump, skimmer and an 8 bulb ATI hybrid. Dosed automatically and fed well. Plenty of good flow too.
Here is the curious thing I have noted....
The 55 is growing sps (sticks) much better then the 70. I have several corals that have almost no growth after 6 months in the 70 yet when I put stuff in the 55 they take right off. I have a green slimer in the 70 that is in good light and flow that has no growth except for a little bump of its side after this amount of time. Meanwhile the sticks in the 55 have started to branch and encrust and color up well after just a couple weeks. I have started dosing alk in the 55 by hand as it was under 6 and I added enough Calc and Mag. to get those numbers where they need to be but for the most part it’s just a neglected tank.
Go figure!
