As the journey continues- I’ve decided to upgrade tanks. I picked up a nice used reef savvy tank- currently cycling for a few months. Eventually I’ll move everything from the 90 bow front to the 120 reef savvy
I picked up a used bubble magus D8 skimmer (traded a local reefer.
also a Maxspect turbine duo 12k return pump as well.
Started with all aragonite sand (larger sizes grains) some live sand, some dry sand. I ended up getting it thru Petco, using the promotions and the sale they had, paid about 50 cents a pound for the dry and about $1 a pound for the live sand. Added 156 lbs total. Wanted deep sand bed, it’s at about 2” deep Live rock and some rubble rock from my other tanks sumps. Added microbacter7 daily. Also added the large marine pure block in the sump. Had it cycling almost 60 days, then I came across a yellow tang and a fox face from another local reefer for a decent price. They are so far the only live stock in the tank, with the exception of a few snails and a hermit.
the plan is to move doser, lights, mp40’s, chiller, reactors etc, and most* rocks and all live stock from the 90 to this tank. But I plan on taking the next steps slowly. Plan out aquascape, coral placement etc. I’ve learned a few things over the last few years, and want to use that to better design the layout of the tank.
the sump in the reef savvy is a Synergy Reef Systems- ShadowBox- it has two 4” filter socks, and is plumbed in for dual return pumps- hence the Maxspect duo pump. I have never really purchased the more expensive items new. I usually search for good quality used things. But could not find this used so I was quite excited when the wife gave the “ok” for a new $400 return pump .
will be looking for a ATO container that fits nicely under the stand for a reasonable cost. We will see what we come up with.
the two things I would like to eventually add is a calcium reactor and a algae reactor. These are far down the need and want list but eventually I would love to have both. Been watching offer up and other selling apps in case a good deal pops up. Hopefully if it does, I have the funds available
here’s some photos of the new tank. (Well not new- it’s used. But new to me!)
p.s. would like to thank the seller again- they gave me the reef savvy: $850 for tank, already plumbed, stand, RedSea screen top, and the sump.
so far I’m only in $1500 - and most everything else I can use from the 90 gallon. I think it’s a pretty sweet tank to only cost me $1500. But for me, I’m a budget reefer- and search daily for deals, make trades, sell things to get funds to get new things and whatever I can to save a buck lol. It’s the only way I can stay in this hobby, and the “chase” for a good deal is fun for me. I’ve always had to work hard for things I want, and the process of finding and getting a deal is super enjoyable to me - like a second hobby lol. And I’ve meet so many people in the hobby, and been given some sweet deals! I’m blessed to have these tanks, and can’t wait to see where this journey leads me next!
