I wanted share something with everyone. This is one of the biggest reasons that I'm able to keep my nano reef healthy. You may have seen my last post about adding a macro algae reactor to my system, but that is not my greatest help, although it has been a game changer.
Now my greatest help keeping my reef healthy is running filter floss. But the secret is where I get the filter floss from. Instead of buying high cost petstore floss, I get it from a $10 body pillow I bought at Wal-Mart. And let me tell you, it lasts for ever! I'm still on the same pillow that I bought last year. And all I did to prep it was wash it a couple times in the washing machine like I did my filter socks. Some might be skeptical, and I admit I was at first. A friend of mine (the Captian) was the first one to tell me about it. And originally I used it in a rotter tube which made cleaning filter socks a thing of the past. But I only used a sump on my nano for a short while till later when I went back to just using the all in one part of my tank. I have no skimmer, and have not used one in over a year, maybe longer. I sometimes run carbon but it's only about twice a year. And other than the floss and macro algae, i have no other filtration except rock and sand. Now before I added the algae reactor I used a nano reactor that i filled with filter floss that i change once a week. I still currently run the nano reactor along with the algae reactor but this weekend I took my reactors to the next level.

I was starting to get a build up of detritus in the back. So I pulled all the algae out of my reactor and placed it in my display for safe keeping. Then filled both my reactors with filter floss. I unplugged my return pump so that it would not send any detritus into my display. Then plugged in both pumps to the reactors. Now both reactor pumps are in the back compartments of my all in one, along with the returns. I had so much of a build up that I had to change the filter floss after just a couple hours of running them. Then today I put everything back the way it was before the cleaning started, and now my water is nice and polished.

Post some pics please. I'm curious.

So the first picture is of the reactor filled with the filter floss. It has a led strip light around the reactor to grow macro algae. But it's way to bright. I had to turn it down to about 6% to keeping from bleaching the algae.

This is what's left of my body pillow. I pulled some stuffing out and set it on top so you could see it.

This is my nano reactor. It's not very big but it does the job. I some times run carbon pellets in it, but it's very rare.

It's really cool. I've had this reactor for over two years. You can pull the reactor chamber out for changing the contents, which makes it super easy to change.

I use the quilt batting from Walmart. It's in a flat sheet and easy to cut with scissors to shapes to fit in the sump of the big system and overflow of the frag tank.

Thanks for the pics!

I love this reactor more and more. Tonight I decided to clean the detritus from the back part of my tank. Usually this involves a plastic rod and a rubber band to attach some air line too. Then pull all the rubble back there out, and start a siphon.
Instead of doing all that fun stuff I just pulled the chateo out of the reactor, filled it with pillow stuffing. Cut my return pump off to the tank then turned the reactor pump on. Now, I'm catching it all!

So here is the final result after only 90 minutes or so. Yes it's dirty, yes it's filthy, and probably have stuff in there I don't even want to know about. But now the back of my all in one is clean of detritus

Joann Fabric has the large rolls of quilting batting (it is in the very back of my store with the pillows and green foam). They always have a 50% off coupon available (teachers/homeschools get 15% off, can’t be combined with coupon but CAN be combined with sale items). That makes the batting about $3.50 a yard (I think it is about 48” wide).

They also have the ecofelt that I use for filter socks. I do not have a sump, but I clip it onto a bucket and filter the water through it and add the water back to the tank. Makes it easy to clean out algae, cyano, etc.... Just make sure it does not have a flame retardant on it.
