Hey guys thinking about making my own sump/refugium when the water drains in to the sump from the overflow do you need a certain power pump to pump it out the same time its coming in. As always thanks.

It's actually the opposite of what your thinking. The drain needs to be able to handle more water than your return pump. Your overflow will only drain what water is above the lip of it.

Let's say your tank is set up but not running. Gravity has pulled water to a resting point in your display. This water is now in your sump (hopefully not on your floor). This is your resting water level.

When you power on the pump it takes the water from your sump and pushes it to your display. Once it reaches a certain point it will start to overflow. When it overflows, the overflow will return it to the sump. This is your running water level.

It is really important to have a big enough sump to handle the difference between the two levels.

Good question! It's a really important step of choosing equipment/sump size
