I have been watching this guy at a local bigbox pet store for the past few weeks. My QT presently has some new stock in it so is unavailable. I could not stand it anymore and asked the store manager If I could get a discount on the fish if I I purchase a new tank setup. I was told this fish looks fine by the store manager and that he could not provide a discount. After paying my bill for the dog food I was flagged down by the fish department attendant who told me the manager asked him to euthanize the fish. I wish 4 letter words were permitted here

I'd have asked to speak to the manager again and reminded him as to what a sociopath is. Then I would have asked for a refund on my items I purchased and recorded the entire event.

Horrifying!!

If this is happening anywhere, it's neglect and it's inexcusable. I know for a fact that PetCo will pay to have their birds, reptiles and small mammals treated for illnesses/diseases and the only time they're euthanized is if they're beyond treatment or the treatment would outweigh the profit. (I know the store wasn't mentioned and it could be any big box, I'm just sharing my experience with A big box store and if PetCo can do it, anyone can do it.) To deny that fish a chance was criminal. How dare any big box store allow a fish to suffer as if they are not sentient. ARGH!! It kills me to think of a creature suffering like that. That poor fish is clearly starving, whether it be from lack of food, parasitic or disease, it's suffering!
The manager was the worst of his kind, a liar. I would have been hard pressed to leave the store without that fish. I can be a real pain in the behind when I want to be and I'd be sure to make that manager miserable until the fish was in a bag in my hand. Then I'd go somewhere else to buy the tank.

That is truly pathetic, which is putting it rather mildly compared to how I actually feel about it. On a business level that manager wasn't even thinking of his store, even discounted its still profit. The only thing that guided his choice was pride, and an animal had to pay the price for it. Not a care for the animals that are his responsibility and he put his pride before his store. He isn't fit to have that position. Disgusting, that's all I can think.

Unfortunately it doesn't take much to outweigh the profit on most animals that these stores sell. They typically do not get any kind of discount for veterinary services, so they do the cheapest fix they can do or end up euthanizing. I used to work at Banfield in a Petsmart, so I've seen it first hand. I also used to work in a private veterinary hospital that treated Petsmart (no Banfield inside of it) and Petco pets.

For the past 12 years I have been working at a private veterinary hospital that regularly sees and treats pets for 3 local Petco stores. I'm continually amazed at how much they are willing to spend even on a $10 hamster. Sure, it's not hospitalization or hundreds of dollars but it's more than I'd expect.
