A Sad Black Friday For Our Tank Community

So came home from work Friday morning and did my normal thing check on my tank and see how our lil fishy are up to and notice our sting ray was dead. Saw he seating on our sand bed folded up like a taco and not moving. I knew something was up because two days ago she ate a hermit crab and she wouldn't eat all day thanksgiving day so we knew something wasn't right. Then on my way to work my wife text me and said our flame angel pasted away, that upset me more since I just got it two days ago. So it wasn't a very joyful thanksgiving weekend for our lil tank community.

Our guess is she ate one of our hermit crab because I found a empty shell and body parts floating aroun the tank. So I'm guessing it didn't go down easy my lfs said that it might have caused the ray to get indigestion. Because after she ate it she didnt wanna eat anything else. As for our flame angel my guess was stress I moved my live rock around and did a 30% water change and since we just got it two days befor maybe it wasn't settled in yet and was stressed. I did notic it was getting Ich not sure if it got it from our blue tang or if it came from stress. Our tank is a 30 gallon jebo tank was going to go bigger one we saw the fish getting to big or that one.

That's not good about the ray. I thought they ate hermits... Maybe not though.

Whoa! 30 gallons? I'm not up on sting rays but I'm not sure a 30 gallon tank is a good size for it. Also the tang may do a lot better in a 6ft long tank. I hope an upgrade is in the works soon. Maybe the LFS is stealing you in a wrong direction

Well I read that they would eat hermit crabs but I just she was still to young to break it Down.

yeah I know our tang requires a bigger tank and we are upgrading the tank maybe mid jan after I under stand this hobby a lot more. There so much to learn darn fish so sensitive and picky.

please do get a bigger tank if you wanna keep tangs, Please dont get rays they need atleast 100gal tanks

This is a good place to learn Don't get discouraged when we (not so nicely) give advise. We don't mean it badly. It's always best to research a fish before buying it. One place I look is liveaquaria.com They have a vast amount of information for each fish including minimum tank size, food requirements, ideal water temp, etc.

When you upgrade it would be a good idea to keep your 30 gallon and use it as a quarantine tank. It's where new fish should go for 6-8 to make sure they are healthy and disease free before entering your display.

Please ask any questions you have here. I'm sure someone will be happy to answer them.

No I didn't I just started this hobby 2 month ago

Oh trust me I'm not one to take any advice in a rude way or anything in rather have someone point out what I'm doing wrong so I can learn from it then making the same mistake over and over.

Yeah I go to that site a lot when we decide what kinda fish to get but once again we kinda started this up on a spare the moment kinda deal and I guess now were learning as we go. But I really hate that I had to lose fish in the process we love animals and to me this is more then a hobby I love the ocean and all it beauty it holds.

Some of the best advise I've gotten in this hobby
1. go slow
2. research everything and ask questions
3. keep things as stable as possible
4. weekly water changes with ro/di water

Lfs's most of the time have informative people the problem is they need you to buy things to stay in business.
