Hi everybody,

I’m wondering if it is possible to get a second fish for my tank. I have the Fluval 13.5 and at the moment I have one Transparent Cave Goby. Supposedly they can grow to 3” and according to ORA if they’re going to share a tank with others of the same species they each need a square foot of space.

She seems to hang out on the sand bed. I’d really like to add one of the following to my tank, but does anybody know if they’d fight with my current bottom dweller?

1.Blue neon goby OR
2. Masked goby OR
3. Tiger goby (tigrigobius macradon)

Do masked gobies need to be in at least a pair? Could I even put 3 fish in my tank?

A tiger goby would quickly run out of zooplankton to eat in the sane which would be a problem. The neon goby is fine. I have never worked with a masked goby but it looks to be ok.

Any of those would be fine in your tank as long as you have a cover. Mask gobies do not need to be a pair.

A neon is probably the best choice of one that will stay out of the cave goby's space.

I have an evo 13.5 and a big tank.
I have a cave goby in the big tank and wouldn't put it in the evo.
I have a tailspot blenny in mine for the rocks and corals, lovely little fish, not sure about your other goby wish fish.

Everything I’ve read about the yellow watchman goby (except here) says they get 5-6” long and I can’t imagine putting a fish that size in this tank. Unfortunately I have the transparent cave goby already, because all ORA and other sites say it does well in a 10 gallon tank.

@najer is your cave goby the ORA Transparent Cave Goby (common names make it so hard to be clear sometimes!)? Why would you recommend it for a bigger tank? I’m very open to rehoming mine if that would be best for it but it’s sort of a bummer hearing that LiveAquaria and ORA might not be making good tank size recommendations in this case.

the tiger goby I mentioned is not the sand sifting tiger goby. It is another one that is recommended for 10g tanks.

@Tamberav thanks! I am looking for a fish that will occupy a different niche.

Yellow watchmen are not active at all they would be fine in that tank

The only downside I have seen to watchmens is they can sometimes be aggressive to other fish that hang out in their space if the tank is small.

Another fish to consider on the captive list is the court jester goby. I have one in a 5g and it readily eats any prepared foods, frozen or pellets. It also picks at the sand and rock.

Fusigobius pallidus

Name from live aquaria, I am in England.
I bought a pair for my big tank which is approx 125 G display, the big one moved so much sand it basically cycled my tank.
It got killed by my ex jewel blenny and the smaller one is a lot less destructive but does use all of my sandbed area and has 2 or 3 favourite spots.
My concern is that it would make it more territorial in a 13.5, I'm not saying don't do it just that from experience I wouldn't.
