A simple ick question hopefully :)

Hey everyone. I had a quick question. My fish are going through copper treatment in my DT almost 2 weeks now. If kept levels at 1.75 ppm using coppersafe and Hanna checker. Today I did a water change and added copper back to the bucket but when my tank was full I did an a test and caught it within 5min and Hanna read 1.33 ..i immediately added more now back to 1.80 ..did I break the cycle even if it was for 5 minutes? Do I have to start over?

I'm no expert but I doubt that short period affected the treatment. The Hanna has a plus or minus error range probably to. I guess you know corals and inverts won't work in your DT after copper treatment right? From I understand it seeps or binds to rocks and is difficult to remove once established.

Others here are more knowledgeable then me is this area though so hopefully they will respond.

The full dose for coppersafe is 2.5 ppm. If your target has been 1.75, that is too low. You really need to keep the treatment above 2.0 for it to be effective. Since you have a Hanna HR checker, you can more effectively keep it at that level without worrying too much about bad test results causing issues.

Wait really? Ive read several forums on here and everyone said 1.5 to 2.0 for Fritz coppersafe?? Have I been deceived Lol? please because if so I definitely have to start all over

Please stop and this is a suggestion reading multiple posts as you will get awfully confused. While R2R is not the only source with direction, it is one of the better,.
To elaborate, you must run a therapeutic minimum as there is a term called treatment clock in which you must adhere to treatment with. Copper Power or coppersafe is my choice at therapeutic level 2.25-2.5 for a FULL 30 days, monitored with a reliable copper test kit such as Hanna brand, not Api
Also monitor ammonia level with a reliable test kit during treatment and would not be a bad idea to add an air stone for added oxygen during treatment
You will also need to leave display tank Fish-Less (Fallow) for at least 6-8 weeks to assure the cysts and trophants have completed their life cycle without a host and have died off

Regarding clock- If you got to therapeutic level today, clock starts today and ends Dec 16 maintaining full level

What fish do you have under copper? Coppersafe is mild for virtually every species of bony fish. Sharks and rays are an exception. There are species of fish that do not handle quarantine well, but that is not a function of copper, but rather, the quarantine environment overall - jawfish and mandarins are prime examples. Delicate fish like small anthias can also be an issue.

When you read that copper is hard on fish, that is always referring to ionic copper - copper+citric acid or cupramine.

That makes so much more sense. Looking at my bottle now it says. Chelated copper sulfate 2.2%. Wow this saltwater approach can be so tricky. Thank you for clarifying.

The simple answer is no. I drop copper all the time on quarantine systems with no issues for that period of time. In my systems, I use water from a large reservoir. When I do a water change on a QT, I replace the water with fresh seawater, let it mix, then test for copper and redose proportionally. The tank is at lower copper levels for 30 minutes or so. That is never an issue. However, in your case, the clock never really started because your copper level was sub-therapeutic.
