A very beautiful but dying brain

so for the past 2 or 3 months I'v watched a very beautiful Trachy or open brain coral die at my LFS. It has beautiful color on the part that isnt dead and is about 3-4 inchs in size. What I'm wondering is if It would be wise to try and talk them into either giving the coral to me or try and sell it to me for a very low price in hopes I could maybe save it. I have room in my display tank and I love LPS corals so my tank has been setup mainly for them type of corals. The tank that it is in now seems to have a lot of corals that have poor growth. A good example of this was my acan I got from them about a month or so ago, they had it for a few months and it started loosing color and wasnt growing. Since being moved to my tank its tripled in size and has beautiful color coming in. What turned out to be a cheap $20 brown acan ended up being a beautiful rainbow haha

I'm gonna post a photo I found online of a dieing brain. The one in the store is in just as bad shape if not worse.

What do yall think of this idea?

If you can get it for CHEAP! And I mean $5 or less I think it is worth a shot. I would not recommend putting it directly in your DT just do the the fact that their could be parasites on it seeing as it is dying. If you do snag it please keep us informed[emoji1360]

Sadly I don't have a QT tank setup or anything else I could really put it. Best I could do is dip it :[

I would say it would be a treatment more than a dip. I had some acans going south really fast like the flesh falling off gave it a bath and the determination of the flesh stop so it's a win and looks good to. I also use bayer to dip to.!

I really wish I had a tank setup that would be used as a resting place for it...

@Zack Klabunde what if I setup a 10g tank with a current USA led on top with some live rock from my display tanks sump with a HOB filter... would something like this work? or what are your thoughts

That would work. Then you can observe it their and if it does have any pests than they are contained to that tank. I would be cautious putting the LR back afterwards.

What would you say would be a decent time for it to be in that tank would be? Also how much attention would you say it would need because I'm actually at college so I'm only home during the weekends to do tank maintenance while my father feeds and checks up on things during the week. If I had to I could setup a tank in my dorm to monitor it here but that would be a little extreme I think haha

The more monitoring the better. Maybe have your dad send daily pictures. You want to keep him in the tank until he looks healthy. The last thing you want is a rotting coral in your DT.

a little update.

I decided to not pull the trigger on this one. I visited the shop over the weekend to find that over half of it is dead now and you can barely even see its mouth :\

doesn't help for the fact he offered to sell it to me which yeah no thanks

Good idea. It is a difficult and labor intensive task Erving a dead coral. Made a good decision [emoji1360]

Yeah I've heard of people using it as a dip. Personally I use bayer...

bayer kills bugs. Melafix kills infections.

for me it was more of the fact he tried to sell it to me just from me asking what happened to it.

story is he was away on vacation and another coral fell on top of it and stung it really badly. No one at the shop removed it and so it laid on there for days. By time it was removed it had badly damaged the coral now 3/4 of it is dead.

its such a shame.. it looked similar to the one posted below but it had very bright easter colors instead of the deep colors in the photo... it was filled with easter blues, greens, pinks, and purples.

next weekend when I'm home again I'll try to take a picture of it so yall can give me your input... maybe if yall think its possible I'll give it a go and put a bid out for it

Id go for screaming deal or free. Or buy other coral and toss it in. "The Bundle"
