A war going on in my tank

Yesterday I added 3 lyretail anthias to my display and my yellow tang is doing his best to try and kill them. Do you think he will settle down??

Zebrasoma tend to give up eventually but the question is-- will it be too late for the new fish?

Perhaps remove him and put him in a social acclimation box.

Usually yellow tangs don't care too much about fish that aren't shaped like them, however there are always exceptions. It should calm down soon.

You can try to place a mirror against the tank. This should take the focus off of the anthias and allow them to settle in.

I put the mirror on the opposite side of the tank from where the anthias hang out thinking the tang would stay over there attacking the glass. Well it had the opposite effect. He wouldn't go near it, so I put the mirror on the side where the anthias are and so far so good. He is staying on the other end flaring his fins.

I watched a yellow tang murder a leopard wrasse at a pet store it kept biting it over and over til it went belly up. they can be quite nasty if they want

Yes they can. Honestly I wish I had never put this sucker in my tank, but he has been in there about 5 months, so he is like part of the family. It was one of those spend 50$ and get a one dollar yellow tang deals. I would much rather have a kole, but he has already harassed one of those to death.

I've had my yellow tang for around 16 years and it's only really had any beef with a huge domino damsel i have but most of my fish have been together for many years

Wow, you mean I have to put up with his tude for that long!!! LOL great job, you must be doing something right to have a fish that old. I have terrible luck with fish, coral seem to be much easier to keep. But the coral seem happier when theres plenty of poopers in the tank.

They can live up to 40 years in the wild. if you want fish to live a long time feed them healthy food and don't starve them, so your best to keep diseases and parasites out of the tank and don't overstock your fish and the number 1 thing is be prepared for emergencies. power outages can wipe out a heavy stocked tank a lot quicker than you think.

Mirros work great. i have used them many times with multiple tangs. I had a 6 line wrasse that LOVED to flare up at it too. quite funny how much time that fish hung out there.
