I have been running my 2 kessils using the the apex iota protocol and wifi dongle. Just recently one light would stay on and the other would either turn off or change color despite Apex and kessil noting that both light would be controlled the same way at the same time if connected together using only one dongle.

The light that was turning off is the Same light that started changing colors, more towards white.

I thought the light may have been turning off due to heat, it was turning off at the highest intensity during the lighting period, about 60 percent though. I took both lights appart and cleaned them very well but not much dust though. If I unplug the light and plug it back in it resets itself to normal usually until the next day.

Tonight I reset the dongle and kessil app, deleted it from apex and set it back up to use just the kessil app as it was before apex controll.

I guess I'll see, if it still acts up I guess it may need better cleaning or an application of new heatsink grease if it doesn't act up then there's something weird with apex kessil controll.

Sorry for the long drawn out post just wondering if anyone else using apex to controll kessil has experienced weird stuff like this.

Edit: the light that has the dongle plugged into it is the one that was turning off, changing colors, and the dongle was still controlling the other light through the klink cable just fine.

I run the AP9X lights with a set of 3. Since I set it all up it's solid and reliable without any issues. These do have the wifi built in and not the dongle but the cloud service and app is the same. If you continue having issues though I would open a ticket with Kessil. They actually are good for answering questions and helping so IMO not a waste of time.

I would double check that the connection from the dongle and cable to the other light are solid and there's no debris or anything preventing a good connection. If it's not connected properly, stuff like this happens.

the dongle was originally set up using the kessil app to control the lights. its either the light itself or residual software issue from when kessil had control.

So I got home and the kessil light is still acting up. Blue channel goes out. Guess it's time to take it apart and do an ultra cleaning and apply new heat sink grease.

Have you reversed the order? Put the dongle in the other light and connect via link cable.

Yep that was the first step I took. Even swamped power supplies.
Today I got home and unplugged the dongle and klink cable completely and used the 2 controlls on the light itself. And it does the same thing so I definitely have it narrowed down to being the actual light itself.

They were purchased November 2019. So out of warranty. So I'm not concerned about voiding it.

As long as I have driver bits small enough for all the screws I can get it apart and apply new grease to the heatsink. Between working in a machine shop and 6 years electronics in the Marines I think I can handle it now. If that dont work then it's a new light. But it does seem heat related. And the fan does work.

Thanks for all the help anyway.

Reach out to Kessil, they may be able to guide you or help? I've had nothing but stellar customer service from them. @Kessil any thoughts?

I contacted Kessil Saturday recieved a response Monday. And determined that it's the light. I also removed the chip from the heatsink and applied new grease and sealant to the chip. Still did the same thing so it appears to be in the blue channel of the control board.

They offered possible repair or a discounted brand new light. I opted for the discounted light. And recieved the new one today.

The lights are almost 3 years old, inside a hood. Still shouldn't have failed. But I still liked the response from kessil, And not going to throw them under the bus yet.

If you are not doing so try and gently blow out the light every month. Every other at the latest. I've found that it helps and I think they also recommend this on their FAQ.

Kessil support is pretty darn good but I may be a bit biased as every time I've used it I had excellent response. Glad you are up and running.

Their customer support has been stellar every time that I’ve contacted them, which is another reason I support them. Yes, everyone should be using compressed air to clean out the lights once a month while they are off and cool.

On the subject of cleaning them, I’m amazed it voids the warranty of you take them apart. Well….not necessarily amazed…it’s just that it is basically necessary to disassemble them to actually get them clean. I used an entire can of air on mine that was acting up. Ultimately when I took it apart it was still filthy (which wasn’t the problem). Even trying to use canned air directly to the dust it wouldn’t come unstuck. I had to use q-tips soaked in rubbing alcohol to get all the surfaces and fan blades clean again. Spraying Air alone into the vents was all but useless
