Hello, I'm new to r2r and wanted to share my 40 breeder build which I started in June of 2018.

I bought a 40 breeder and drilled it for a eshopps eclipse overflow.

I bought some glass from a glass cutting store and a 10 gallon fishtank. The glass was to make baffles for the sump. I then painted the back with plasti dip and plumed the tank with pvc.

Next I aquascapeed with carib sea dry rock.

I added a reef octopus skimmer, and small fuge and moved everything over from my old 16 gallon tank that I was upgrading from.

Welcome to R2R!!! I really like the 40B layout and you look like you are off to a really good start! I look forward to seeing more pictures as your tank continues to come together! Good work so far!

Thank you, I love this hobby and tried to do everything the best I could taking budget and past experience into account.

I’m in the process of setting a 40b up. How do you like the overflow? Was thinking of the bean animal but might just do herbie instead.

Honestly I like it! not loud and really low profile in the tank. I also run a piece of floss in it which makes it even quieter.

The Big Al's pet store in my area had a tent sale and had a good deal on a reef octopus classic 110ext. Got $150 off of what other stores in the area list it for!

It is my first time using a recirculating external skimmer. So far I like it way better than internal models simply because how easy it is to tune. I'm also using the drain tube from the cup to go into a large external container that way I don't have to worry about the cup overflowing.

So this is the one year update of my 40 breeder. I have upgraded my skimmer and ordered an icp test. Will post those details later. As for the update photo, here it is!

Nice progress in a year! My breeder is about to turn 1 year old, I’ll have to barrow your idea and post a before and after picture :)

I got my ICP results today from ATI. There recommendations are as follows:

Phosphorus is limited, remove GFO (if in use), add phosphorus! Tin is elevated, find source (corroding metals/magnets, RO water, salt).

I knew I had low nutrients and have been dosing AcroPower. I will be removing my GFO as well(don't know why I didn't think of that lol).
I am not sure where the Tin is coming from. My first guess is my wave makers. I use the cheap Jeboa ones so I wouldn't be surprised if the magnet is corroding. I will inspect them this weekend. When they tested my RO everything was undetectable so it is not from my tap water.

Following ATI supplements should be applied in order to provide a stable water quality:
  • Vanadium supplement per day 0.15 ml for 2 days
  • Mangan supplement per day 0.20 ml for 1 day
  • Iod supplement per day 0.07 ml for 3 days
  • Fluor supplement per day 4.87 ml for 4 days
Iodine seems to be the lowest. I need to do some research here. I will dose as they recommend however I would like to know why they are low and what I can do to keep it right other than dose because i don't test these things regularly(change salt mix maybe?).

Here are the complete results.

Tank looks great. I'm dosing ATI Essential Pro and I really like it.
