AB+ and the Mitras LX 7

I think there is a small niche market for modified Mitras boards :)

I like the idea of the ReeFi unit and have to wonder if this just adds some pop, or if the coral benefit greatly. It is certainly part of Chlorophyll A and B absorbance spectrum, as well as that of carotenoids. It has been a while since I brushed up on any studies regarding growth or coloration stimulated by the lower 400s.

I don't see any external way to control the ReeFi - an API would be nice. My only option appears to be to mimic the ramping that I have set in the Mitras. Not clean or ideal, but an option.

Ohh - I guess there is an API of some sort. Maybe I can build an interface controlled by GHL. Interesting.

Ask Daniel at ReeFi his thoughts, but my lights, albeit while running a simplistic cycle, ramp together with no issues.

I've shared elsewhere that these Mitras were given to me by GHL, but failed to do so here. Wanted to make sure that was clear.

Did GHL give them to you for the purpose of recreating the Ecotech Coral Lab AB+ spectrum?

Ok. It certainly would have been beneficial to them to show that the light was capable of the spectrum, but to maybe not demonstrate that themselves directly.

Out of curiosity, were there any conditions tied to them giving you the lights? Other than the obvious for the potential of increased sales on thier part.

No conditions, and because I have the tools to target spectrums, I offered to create something that resembled that popular spectrum. Also no NDAs. That's something that others have indirectly suggested in the past.

Now that I'm further along in my lighting journey, I feel those popular spectrums are all marketing.

Which lighting spectrums? AB+ ?
Any pre-programmed programs. The differences noted by the spectrometer are minimal. That, and the original AB+ is different than current AB+ implementations.

I run all channels at 100% for a while then ramp down to a blue-ish look. That works for me, but for anyone setting their lights, I suggest starting by pinning the UV/violet/blues and bringing up other channels to match a look they like.

To be honest I was not sure of the context. This helps - thanks. Have a good day.

It doesn't seem as prevalent today, but back then this spectrum was being put forward as the "gold standard".
The "gold standard" guys don't work there anymore.

Could be any number of reasons.
  • One could be due to the Reef Wholesale Coral Lab Spectrum and PAR paper
  • Another could be due to the number of sponsored influencers with a lot of subscribers or patreon memberships.
  • Or maybe the BRS light tests and their recommended settings.
Not knocking any of the reasons but these are just my guesses. I don't want to over generalize but to me it appears there are a lot of hobbyist in the US who like the blue side of the spectrum. To clarify what little content I see that seems to be the most common.

My personal preference is a more natural looking spectrum. High noon over a shallow reef while scuba diving. While I do not run them I like the Coral Care Gen 2's but know most lights will grow corals when everything else is well managed and / or kept.
