Can too much activated carbon cause recession in chalices and other corals? I added some fresh Marineland premium activated carbon a few days ago and now a few of my chalices are receeding. Tank params are pretty stable (ALK = 8, Ca = 450, Phos = 0, Nitrate = 10), but I just don't know if this could be related. I add the carbon to a filter bag, rinse it with water, and then put in in the sump. Does anyone have any input?

The carbon is stripping the water of the nutrients that the chalices are used to absorbing. I would try target feeding to see id it reverses or remove the carbon

thanks for the input...i removed half of the carbon that i put in. we'll see if anything gets better.

personal experience...i ran a crap load of carbon for awhile. I thought it would be good for my sps to have super clean water...was I wrong. All my corals mostly sps started losing color and than they started withering a way. All my tangs fins started rotting a way as well..most likely HLLE. I yanked the carbon completely out of the tank about a month ago and everything is slowly starting color up again.
