About to buy a 5 gal

So, I currently have a 27g tank thats been up and running for about 6 months with plenty of corals, shirmp, and fish. Now i have the urge to get a new tank and id really like a 5g to put on my countertop. That being said, can I do i 5g water change and use the water from my 27 and put it in the new 5g? Just to speed up the cycling process a little.

Yes you can, But you might still have to let it cycle for just a bit.

sweet, thanks. I plan on still letting it cycle for a good long period of time. Just figured it might be a better option. I dont plan on putting anything in it besides live rock until the water condiotons are perfect. Learened the hard way with my first tank.

I used water from another tank when I set up my 5g. It’s been 2 years now and I had no issues.

The bacteria that do most of our filtering live on porous surfaces. There isn't much free floating in the water column. It won't hurt using the water from your established tank, but what would really help is a small piece of rock. That will have enough live bacteria to seed your tank and power thru a cycle in little to no time at all.

Just a thought, but I recently saw this gorgeous new 10g desktop reef tank for 200$. It is designed in the same way as a larger 100g but in a 10, I forgot the name of it although I could look it up if you’re interested.

If it were me I’d start with fresh saltwater and live rock just to start off with a clean slate with nutrients . They are definitely trickier to keep up with in such a small tank

This is my understanding as well. Water isn't so much what will help cycle quicker but some live rock.
