Absolute 1 of 1 Chalice

Chalice showoff thread is just that. This thread is more specific. Its easy to pickup a nice frag that keeps its color and eventually grows. This thread is more about picking either a colony or frag of a brown out or dying chalice and watching it evolve over time.

Ok so I have some Aussie chalices that are in the works of coloring so you want those pic's then in a few months post new pic's?

Here's one that I picked up from a local fish store close too 2 years ago. The story behind the store was that the younger brother owns a wholesaler and the older brother got first dibs. The piece came in brown with a green rim. Bought the whole 5"X5" colony for $60.

This piece arrived bleached and receding. A very generous store owner realize the chances are slim that it would make it, pretty much gave it away.

Last one for now. This piece was originally about 6"X4" when it arrived. Basically brown with a green rim. Nothing specially with some slight receding. I fragged it into 4 large pieces after the tank move. This picture is a small frag from one of the larger frags. I will try and have my friend take a pic of the other frag lower in the tank. If I recall correctly, it was no more then $80.

nice pickup neyugn, I spotted a 4" chalice at my LFS it has lots of bright green eyes
but the base is brown and is $60. I'm debating if I should give it a shoot. How long did it take for those corals to color backup for ya!

I would pick that up for sure. $60 is not a bad investment.
I had corals that color up almost immediately and some that are still coloring up (2yrs and going). Start them low and shaded and move them up slowly. Sometimes I would frag them and place them throughout the tank.

Picked this one up late 07. Never been fragged but has been through 2 tank transfer and a few neglected weeks. Finally coloring up. Currently under a cliff and super low light. No actinic, No LED actinic, NO wishy washy blue bulbs. Will take a better picture when the tripod arrives. Trying to capture the pink in those eyes and streak. Can't wait to get a nice macro shot.

This thread is inspiring me to go pick up a brown chalice! Maybe I'll pick one up next time I see a cheap one with some "spark."

Here is one that was a true gem in the rough for me. I picked up some sps corals a an LFS and he threw in a freebie point of sale that was all browned out. It was the size of a quarter but I didn't know what kind of coral it was. I placed it high up in the light with the other sps frags I got and just let it go. It just turned browner and uglier, so I finally put it on the bottom of the tank. Over two years of growth, it has turned into a beautiful mycedium with amazing colors! Here is a pic:

I picked this one up with some tissue recession.

I got this all browned out for $5....started to color up within a couple of weeks of being put in the tank...not bright, but reminds me of Autumn...I love it.

This was also a very bleached out looking frag I got for about $10, it took about 4 months to get to this point...

Wow i like it!!!

Bob, you never cease to amaze me! that piece is what it's all about, a true killer find!

Darryll, that is another killer find, really didn't look like much in the begining but look at it now! Awesome

My LFS had this as a entire colony when they first received it, looking a bit browned out and dullish, I did however see the hints of the orange but always passed on it due to the price tag. After about passing on it 5 times or so I noticed they finally gave in a fragged it up into smaller pieces, so I finally pulled the trigger when it was finally put in the $20 frag tank :) well with a little TLC it has finally gotten brighter and is showing a nice blue rim, I saw something similar on the Chalice Show-off thread but for $20 I couldn't pass
