Last night I observed a pencil sized area of tissue recession on a new acan echinata. I added it to the tank on Thursday.

This morning I woke up and it now looks like this, which is pretty awful. Everything else in the tank looks fine, including two chalices, another acan echinata and a torch coral; so I assume its not the parameters.

What might be causing this and what can I do to prevent it?

Possibly damage from shipping, and ensuing bacterial infection? Is there anything near it to sting it? Do you have peppermint shrimp, they can sometimes kill Acans.

There is a torch 6 inches away.
Little mummy eye about 2 inches behind.

Whats the solution if its a bacterial infection?

I also just dosed the tank with prazipro if that matter for anything

A torch can most definitely do that to an Acan. that close. I would move it away from the torch. I would cut the frag. You have to cut it with all good tissue to save it. Discard the dead side. Hope this helps.

They usually heal pretty well. Just watch it to make sure that any more dead tissue is blown away and not allowed to sit. Definately move it away from the Torch.

And considering that the damaged side is closest to the torch that makes it more likely?

Its only a 2 head torch frag also.

And why doesnt the torch sting the zoa frags?

Im new to acans, So how best do I remove the bad tissue? heavy scalpel through it?

Just give it very low light, low flow and try to gently blow off the dead tissue, if there is any there. I hope it recovers!
You have checked your water parameters right?

Yep just checked them and they are what they pretty much always are.

salinity 1.025
phosphates .07
alk 9.8 dkh (a bit higher than usual, but I just switched to a new salt bucket_
temp is 80

I blew off all the dead tissue I can and put it in the lowest flow lowest light area of the tank. Hopefully it recovers, I really like this piece.
