The last thread regarding lighting went really well and there was a lot of good discussion so let's keep it going.

Again, for those of you that keep acans, what do you feed them? Do you spot feed or just let them catch what they can? Mysis? Pellets? Let's hear your tricks to encouraging acan growth via feeding!

Not sure if this will mean much... but I got my first acan back in mid April. Twice a week, I spot feed each polyp one 1mm NLS marine formula pellet. While gone on vacation for 8 days, 9 new polyps appeared on that 3 polyp frag. Whether that would have happened without spot feeding, I don't know. Am I going to stop... nope. Am I going to invest in some actual LPS food... yep.

I feed Fauna Marin 'Ultra' LPS Pellets. 5 polyp frag, fed twice a week for just now 3 months and is growing 4 new heads as of last Saturday. I have other acans that also are being fed this and all seem to readily take it, digest it, and keep if not enhance their color. I wouldn't say they gain any ultra color though.

Do you use the medium or large pellets? I'm currently using the medium and I feel like they're too small to handle, even with a dropper.

I believe the medium pellets. I generally use my own hands to feed. Only issue I've seen is once they hit water they get very fragile and sometimes I smush them up before they get to the actual coral. That only happens 1 out of 20 times though :P.

I have 2 good size brains, a flat wellso at 6 inches long and a folded wellso at 5 inches when puffed up. Both of these guys will take a good pinching of pellets as well.

i always heard the meatier the food the better? but i feed mysis and brine shrimp every sunday night right before a water change and they are doing great!

I feed mine 5 times a week in the morning, before the lights come on- Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings I feed them masago (smelt eggs) and tapeko (flying fish eggs). Tuesdays and Thursdays I feed the Fauna Marin LPS pellets.

Good topic!

I spot feed brine/mysis soaked in oyster feast. I don't do it regular but have good results. The oyster feast really excites them and as soon as I drop some in the tank they open right up. Even during the day. So I usually just feed them right when I turn the lights on.

I wonder if anyone has ever done a side by side comparison with two frags off the same colony side by side... one fed, one not. Would be interesting to see the results.

3 times a week I will turn all pumps off and broadcast feed my tank coral frenzy. While I do not get super growth I do tend to get a new polyp a month from at least 1 of my acans.

Great video. How long did it take for them to get that size?

Part of me is salty...,

Great topic, just got my first ever acans (Boomsticks) and I love 'em haha! I've fed them once so far and plan to do so once a week for now. I used frozen mysis. Nice tank btw Wes!

I spot feed with mysis mixed with coral frenzy and sometimes cyclops.

I have used the Marin Fauna small pellets recently and love them. I have also fed enriched rotifers, clyclopeeze, freeze-dried copepods, and other small pellets.....all with good results. I use a 5ml plastic pipette to spot feed, to cut down on waste.
