Yea none that I have seen would be banished to the sump for sure.....All are very pretty and worth having no matter what they are or end up being.....

i learned yesterday that almost everything that we call maximas really are not maximas. where maximas usually grow it is illegal for coral collection so we cannot legally import them. also the colors are much more muted than scolys and other acans. likely what you have is a scoly or lobo.

ok here is a supposed maxima. now i cant get the angle but there is a skeleton of a dead polyp on the backside. in my corals of the world book(3 volume set)by JEN Vernon he shows the structure of the skeleton and it is exactly the same. and im pretty good at id's
with years of experiance. also the feeders are unlike a scoly and it opens twice as fleshy
IDK maybe azurel is right and i just got lucky with mine
i am 99% sure what i have is a maxima by skeletal ID

these pics are from after the daylight were out for an hour, so it has deflated quite a bit

While certainly a nice looking coral, being "lucky" for having an illegally collected an imported coral is not something to be proud of. This type of nonsense (black market smuggling) tarnishes our hobby immensely. I assume you just meant to imply that you were part of this rare occurance, but "lucky" is a word that makes me cringe in this aspect.

Along those lines, it infuriates me that Cherry Corals would sell corals as these. As mentioned, they are either not Acan. maximas, or are illegal. Either way, it put a black eye on CC and the hobby. My impression of CC just went down a notch.

mine did not come from cc and my bad using the word lucky, and if a few slip in here or there it by no means terrible for the hobby. mistakes happen and at least it found a loving home if it is one but at this point i doubt. now im gonna go home and kiss my tank

Yeah, like I said, I assumed you meant you were taken aback to be part of the transaction. But far too often, people clamor over each other to try to get a piece of the "action". Remember the Holocanthus limbaughi fiasco of not too long ago? It dumbfounded me how many people applauded someone for trying to illegally smuggle these fish into the country. Simply because they wanted one, Im sure.

Anyway, my comment on CC was aimed at them, not at you. Give you tank a kiss for me.

Jeremy these corals are coming in from Australia labeled as A. maxima. Most dealers have no clue when it comes to ID so they depend on the exporters & wholesalers unfortunately. (by far not defending them for their own lack of research on the subject, but that is an entirely different thread)

Gresham,

Yes, I know the chain of misinformation is sad and long. However, in light of the "phenomenon" of these corals appearing, the discussion of their legality and identification, and the status of the higher end shops, such as CC, I would hope they would not continue the chain of misinformation, and fraudulent sales. I dont feel ignorance is a suitable excuse or explanation. Perhaps I am being too hard. Maybe an email to notify and explain is all it should take. I hope so.

places like CC are pretty good at ID'ing so my comment really doesn't apply to them (IE. I don't think you're being to hard on them, or any that know better) :)

COM (Chain Of Misinformation) has been added to my vocabulary (love the one, thank you)

Like Gresham I think the '' Chain of Misinformation" line is quite good and can be used in quite a bit of daily life especially politics......
In the end it is threads like this that get the info out in the open so others can find out when they google Acan Maxima, as well as other corals....
I think we can close this one down as we pretty much ahve covered all the bases with it.......To those that bought these corals they are sweet, worth every penny you paid for them.....So don't be discouraged love them anyway no matter what they turn out to be.....

Not really. I was just wondering what makes an Acan Maxima, or a coral listed as such, different than a scoly or an acan. This has gotten into that "Right" vs. "Wrong" "Illegal" vs "Legal" territory which is fine with me, but not what I wanted specifically.

Hey NaC

Post a new thread and ask what makes the species of Acanstrea differant including Maxima and acan type mussids, this will help with the information base of R2R as well and should get away fro the legal aspects of Maxima....This way you will also get your answer.
