I have 2 small colonies that are not on frag plugs/disks. One is on the sand and the other on a flat spot in the rockwork. Do acans not like rocks (similar to wesophlia or scoly)?

Yeah all of my Micromussa(Acans) are on the rocks.

I’ve got sub tropical reef platforms less than 400 mtrs from my front door that have a lot of micromussa / acans growing. A lot seem to favour semi shaded crevasses and vertical faces but some are positioned to accept more sunlight. All encrust on rock off the sand.

best kept off the sand. as with most corals due to the accumulation of pathogens in the sandbed. lps placed on the bottom should ideally be placed on rubble. infact acans/ micromussa lordhowensis often grow in shady rockpools where I'm from. here is a photo of one I found yesterday growing down the side of a crevice.
