Acan shriveled and expelling tissue?

I've got 1 acan that has closed up over the last week and just noticed some tissue coming from its mouth. I've got 2 other acans right next to it that are not only staying open, but new polyps are growing.

I've got the acans on the sand (obviously from the pics) and in the corner of the tank where flow is lower and light is low-moderate.


The pinkish intestine like material at the top is what came out of the mouth

Other two acans in this view. At this point the material was fully out of the acan and sitting on the sand behind it. Crabs came pretty quickly and ate the material..

No, it went in the same time the other two acans went in around Oct 20th.

I've had to move these around (within the corner of the tank) as they get bumped and shifted by crabs and snails. I'm thinking about gluing them down to a piece of shelf rock and keep it on the sand bed in the corner to provide a small buffer. This one's got some great blues so it's sad to see it struggling all of a sudden.

I have an ICP test coming tomorrow as my parameters have been stable since they were added

What parameters have you measured? And what were the results. Also what are some of the details of the tank? Lighting, depth of the coral? Any inhabitants that might pick?

Tests from weekly check on Sun were:
Alk - 8.8
Cal - 440
Mag - 1440
Nitrate - 18
Phos - 0.12
pH - 7.8
Salinity - 1.026
Temp - 78.3

Just had par measured a couple weeks ago and that area was ~95-100 par. Depth of 30"

So, this is just my experience. And it was more of an sps problem but none the less something I didn't think of. I was running a higher alk via dosing than my salt mixes at. Pretty substantial difference. It wasn't till installed a trident and saw what was happening during water changes at 10%. I was causing pretty significant Alk swings. I also lost an acan during this.

Not that this is your issue but is parameter swings a possibility? Usually acans are tough. And if others are ok it may have not acclimated well or had issues prior.

Phosphate is a little high, but not insanely high. If it has been stable at around 0.12 for a while, it shouldn’t cause that type of decline. Have any of those parameters swung significantly over a short period of time?

My salt mixes to 7-7.5 and I bump it from there up to match the tank so I don't think it's that.

I usually run higher on phos and nitrate. It is currently at the higher side, but not by a whole lot. 0.15 has been highest, 0.08 lowest over the 4 months its been in the tank. Not ideal, but not terrible in my eyes as little as that may count
