Acan subechinata

nice coral....in fact, that's a VERY nice coral :)...love the colours...even some orange in there.....and yeah...cool contrast with the black.

can you comment on the amount to which it expands??...maximas can almost double their size when fully infalted....corallites which are 5cm across can easily reach 10cm across when the mantle is fully inflated (AIMS)

...you can guess what i'm gonna say....looks like scolymia sp. to me.....i've seen very small specimens at about 1" all the way to 2+" come into stores up here....and they have a morphology pretty much exactly like your pic,...although i've never seen any with such crazy colouration, i'll give you that! ;)

....they usually come in bright reds/purples, with off greens, teals....some come in with "babies" budding from the mother polyp in the same way we seen acanthastrea sp. reproduce, oddly enough.

it's so deceiving that ReefRaft (big lfs up in Toronto) originally thought they were a. maximas and priced them at $800-$900 a pop...no joke...I was there at 10am when the door opened....they came in on a Bali shipment.....nowadays, they come in pretty regularly, and go for $40 to $100, depending on where you shop ;)

Yeah, I'm not sure what it is. I've emailed the people I bought it from to see if either they or their supplier can produce the CITES permit to establish what it is and the legality of owning such a piece. I hope to hear back from them soon.
